What a great entry, Lara! I have so much admiration for you being there for patients and their families, and I know that can't be easy. I think that there are some similarities between doing a marathon, and being there for someone at their end, in that angels appear just when you need them. Not that I'm a big angel person (I'm not) but that was certainly true for me.

Geese are evil. Oh my gosh, what are people doing, letting their geese be free? I can totally see them chasing a car.

Good for you on your stress test. Man, you rock! I had one this summer, and while I thought I did okay, I didn't hold on til the end (I quit about 9 beats from my theoretical maximum). That's dedication. Wow.

And, I can't wait to hear all about the 5 miler! Wuhoo!

About your nursing home surpressed rant ... I definitely get where you're coming from, and I've always worked in health care ... some in palliative care. It is so easy to use a system as an excuse for inaction. Sigh.

About your geese ... YIKES!!!! Lucky they were not part of the cardiac test! (I'm so wanting to make a lame joke about fowl play right now, but I shall refrain...) :)

Hi Lara,
Good for you for getting up that hill! And the goose story is a funny one. My major animal hazard on the rural roads around here is what I call "dog drive-backs" - i.e., you're out on a long run, and somewhere around the turn-around point, a dog (or two) starts running along with you - since they're never leashed around here. I keep going, thinking they'll stop when they get to the end of their "territory," but they don't. I worry about their safety for the whole run, and then when I get home several miles later, I worry that they won't make it home by themselves. So, I end up driving them back to the house where they started following me. This happens to me several times a year! Just another one of the hazards of rural running...
Sorry to hear about your experiences with the patient. I'm sure that weighs heavy on you, but at least you know you did all you could for her.

Having been relatively fit most of my life I have rarely needed to go to a doctor, so am a bit naive as to what a cardiac stress test is. Is this where they tell you if your ticker is ticking right and any potential heart problems?

I had a general checkup last year before training for my first half-marathon.

Hmmm I've been chased by dogs, a bull, a skunk (okay I ran, I don't know if it followed me) - a goose is new. But having grown up on a farm complete with pond, ducks, and yes geese - I know what you're talking about.

p.s. don't raise your arms (see comment 1)

LOL! Well, I never get chased by the livestock on my route. I think the horses could outrun me easily. I thought for geese you were supposed to hold your arms out (airplane style) and it made you look too big for them to handle and they ran away. Or did some farm boy tell that to the kid from the suberbs just to watch him get bit in an uncomfortable spot?
