Running In Place

Be Here Now

I LOVE doing the weights!

Filed under: General — lara at 9:41 pm on Monday, November 1, 2004

That’s a complete and utter lie but I am going to honor Richard’s advice and try to gain an appreciation for it as I grudgingly realize that it will only help my running. My friend and I went to the gym today and it was like the blind leading the naked - “ok, where should I put the seat; this is too light, this is too heavy; was that my second set or third” . I am lacking focus too - sure I want to work my lower body, yes I’ve heard that core exercises are beneficial, no I don’t want to neglect my upper body - but how do I fit it all in and what are really the priorities. The gym is always crowded - ok, always when I’m able to go anyway. You have to wait for weight machines and forget about getting a treadmill or elliptical after 4 PM. All I keep thinking is I’d rather be running. Wahhhh :(

Ok ok, enough whining for now. I’ll stick with it and really try to find the love, maybe I’ll even cough up the $$ for an hour of personal trainer to get me on a good regimen. Meanwhile, as I settle into this, I’ll apologize in advance for random laments that may arise.

Next week begins my 5k training for the January 1 Resolution Run. Gots to get me a nice bright reflective vest as the dark time is upon us, also put in my requests with Santa for some polartec goodies and silk long johns. Snow is forecast for Friday!

You kill me Lara! Take it from someone who really also “loved” weights. I actually don’t mind ‘em at all now. Took about 3 weeks for the habit to take.

:)

Weights are good for you! Y’know, a small weight set for home would work really well. No lines and you can grunt all you want and not be embarassed. Used weights are cheap too. When I was lifting in high school I made a set of dumbells from two paint buckets filled with railraod spikes and old steel pipe. Uh, you can spring for something facier but my point is you can do upper stuff at home real easily and not lost time waiting in line at the gym.

Oh I am with you on the weights. Yuk. But I do them, mostly because I’ve seen the benefits. As soon as you begin to see shape and form (and strength), it will be worth it!

Hi. Maybe you need a fun exercise video to go along with until you get the hang of weights. Exercise buddy helps too. Good luck.
