Running In Place

Progress in running, but problems with commitment…

Filed under: General — lara at 11:33 am on Saturday, September 4, 2004

I can’t make a single complaint about how running went this week - when I did it. I went out Tuesday and did 2 min. run/1 min. walk x 10, and it went really well. I will admit that, having done no kind of exercise while convalescing the ankle (could’ve, should’ve, didn’t), my cardio is no great shakes and by the end of a couple of reps that 2 minutes had left me pretty winded. By about the 4th time through, I settled in and got comfortable, and it was very reassuring to think my endurance will probably (hopefully) rejuvenate relatively quickly. I had no aches or pains while running, though later in the evening my ankle did a little aching, which led me to decide to do the gym on Wednesday rather than run again right away. Wishful thinking.

The next 3 days I was not only in the no exercise zone, I was in the eat whatever is within arm’s reach zone. On Thursday alone I managed to eat 3/4 of a chicken wing pizza all by myself (finished the other 1/4 on Friday). For some reason it was just very easy for me to keep putting off until tomorrow, as though the week was endless and I would always have enough days to complete my goals. I frustrate myself when I do this because I am really, still, so happy to be running and making my little bits of progress with no physical stumbling blocks. I can’t figure out why I would allow myself to not prioritize it. I am not a victim of some external force, it is entirely based on my effort, lack of it really, and completely within my control. So there, lazy self!

This AM I went out for an early morning run (early not being relative to some of you 5 AM runners :) ) and it again went very well - very well! Plan is to do another 2:1 Sunday, rest Monday, then begin 3:1’s. So things are moving along and I am really feeling good and optimistic. I’ve just got to continue working on making running my lifestyle, not my hobby, because I know that that is what I really want - and it’s even worth foregoing a chicken wing pizza to get there!

Week in Review
Sun: Rest day
Mon: Gym
Tues: 2:1 x 10
Wed. Nada
Thur: Zip (however, if holding a beer in one hand and a slice of chicken wing pizza in the other counts for anything then I am exhausted!)
Fri: Nothin’
Sat: 2:1 x 10

If its any consolation, I had (counting) 11 slices of Mr. Gattis pizza (the small pies, not the 18″ jumbos) for lunch today. And a salad with ranch dressing. Its pretty much all I’ve eaten today (my wife’s out of town and I’m such a buffet-freak when I’m alone), but still. Not exactly the world’s greatest diet anywhere this weekend, I’m thinking.

Its wonderful to see that you are both making progress, and able to keep the slow rate going. I would have been so frustrated and wanting to skip ahead (and reinjure myself) by now, I’m sure. Anyway, do you have plans for the next month or two yet?

And remember, as you increase your running and other exercise(s) you can eat the pizza guilt-free! Don’t turn your back on the ‘za just yet!

Last night was my slide, food-wise, but I’m envious. I want a chicken-wing pizza. I know I’m supposed to be saying, “Hey Lara. Eat better!” Instead, I’m like Homer Simpson, “Mmmm, chicken wing pizza.” But hey, get out there and run. You can stop your slide whenever you want. NEVER wait for the beginning of a week. That’s always a rough way into it all. Just stop when you’re ready. :)
