Run interrupted…

Sometimes life is just silly.

Some time ago I got a Shoe Wallet to hold my car key in when I’m running. Being my usual worry-wart self, I would always check it frequently during runs to make sure the key was secure in the pouch - which it always was - so slowly Shoe Wallet and I developed a trusting relationship. Until yesterday.

I had gone about a mile and a half in on the trail, turned around and headed back about 1/4 mile when I happened to look down and see the pouch just a’floppin around on my sneaker. That’s a heart sinker, let me tell you. As I scoured the trail, having no idea where on the run it might have slipped out, I kept thinking “I’ll look down and see it any time now.” It was not to be :( I have a feeling that it managed to go flying into the tall grass that borders the trail. Fortunately, I had my cell phone with me and was able to call the old man to bring my spare key. I NEVER carry my cell phone with me on a run but it so happened that I was waiting for a call from a friend I was going to meet later, otherwise it would have been locked in my car. For this I am infinately grateful as the alternative would have been to hump it down the road to the lumber yard in all my sweaty glory, leave a message with the kid (husband was running errands), then sit around and wait however long. As it was, it was about an hour and a half before he got home and called me back.

Today, I ran with my key in a death grip in my hot little hand and managed to get my whole time in. I hit the trail about 7:30 AM but it was not the wonderfully cool dry morning of last weekend. The humidity was such that it felt like I was breathing soup. I felt sluggish and slow - which is made sadder by the fact that I’m only running in 1 minute intervals right now and still felt like puking (no snickering…ok, a little snickering’s ok).

I worry about this all the time. It’s a pain to carry keys as I run, but I do it all the time. Glad the running keeps getting better:)

I take my car-remote off the ring and put it into my inside shorts pocket - even so, I check it quite a bit. I know people who lace their keys onto their shoes… pretty much the only thing that makes me wish that I had something like an Explorer that has the keypad to unlock the doors (really, why isn’t that more common?).

The car key adventure doesn’t sound like any fun, but I’m glad you weren’t more seriously stranded.

As for the running, don’t feel discouraged, or like a “slug”, you’re doing great! 1×1x15 isn’t to be sneered at. You’ll move on to longer runs… probably before me! ;)

OMG, I so hear you on this whole key dilemna GF! I lost my key (one, singular by itself) in the sand when running one. Believe it or not I found it but I swore my heart aged a few months worth in a few minutes. I felt just sick about it all. My hubby found me a body glove pouch that goes on my arm at a swim shop in West Edmonton Mall of all places. It zips up and I put my MP3 player, ID discs and key in there. I can even fit my cell phone if I want, but I find that uncomfortable. Anyway, I do hope you find a comfortable way to carry your necessaries on the run and I’m so glad that whole uncomfortable episode is behind you now.

Glad to hear your running is getting stronger. At least you have that to deal with the stress of uncomfortable situations. :-) Onward

What an awesome coincidence that you had your cell phone along! I usually keep my key in my inside shorts pocket or if I am carrying my camelbak, there is a nice little compartment inside it. I am also nervous about losing my key all the time. I thought I was being nerotic. Glad to hear everything turned out ok.

You’re making great progress in your runs. Don’t knock yourself! It’s tough in the humidity.

I will also weigh in on the “key/remote in internal short pocket” technique. And I check it obsessively, especially when trail running. Your adventure had a happy ending, so that’s a good thing!

And if you call yourself a slug one more time, I just may have to drive up there and give you the what-for (I have no idea what that saying means exactly, but you get the idea). You are doing GREAT!!

Dianna, if my internal name calling inspired you to drive on over here and see me it would be self-loathing well spent. :)

Truly though, I remain nothing but grateful that I am running, after not being able to for awhile. Sometimes I feel a little silly when I’m going on about running a matter of minutes rather than a matter of miles but - having gone down this road before - I know that I will progress in due time. Meanwhile, I’ll keep blaming the humidity!!

Thanks as always for the unwavering RBF cheering section!!!

I *hate* losing things. I’m so sorry you couldn’t find it. I tried running with a fanny pack yesterday to see if I could use it to store things necessary for my longer run. What a mess THAT was. Anyhow, if I lost things on my long run, it’d probably ruin my entire workout.

Ok, that sucks. And you’ve also spoiled my next purchase. I was going to buy one of those and now I see that they are untrustworthy. Damn. Have to go back to locking the keys in the car and using the key pad.

“Beathing soup” - what a great description. Uh, as long as its not Campbell’s Chunky soup.
