Running In Place

Be Here Now

It was as wonderful as I’d imagined…

Yes yes, so I’ve been walking walking walking and it has been good.

Today I ran.

Now before the fanfare begins, it was only for 15 seconds to every 1 minute walking - but it was running and it could have been flying (well, slightly less graceful than flying) for as good as I felt doing it. I did the sequence of 15 sec/1 minute 15 times as well as about 15 minutes warm up/cool down walking. By the end, my ankle was aching some but not enough that I needed to favor it at all. I iced it upon arriving home and it feels fine now.

As conservative as 15 seconds sounds, I’m happy with it. Maybe I am too skittish, I don’t know - but I’m willing to totally err on the side of caution because I can’t even describe how devastated I’d be if I exacerbated this injury again and ended up off the trail for another 3 months!! If all goes well and I’m feeling wild, maybe I’ll jack it up to 30 seconds by Saturday - that’ll be my long run for the week :-D

Wow, that is so awesome. Listening to yourself is so important. Sounds like you love your body enough to balance the careful with a challenge to improve. Good luck on the LONG run Saturday. ;)

Wonderful, Lara. You are doing just the right thing. When I hurt my hip a couple of months ago, I cut back to every other day and increased time slowly. It’s taken me a loooong time to get to an hour, but it feels great. And it will for you, too. Go for that long 30 second run and love every second of it!!

Wooo!!!! Flying! That was you, all right. Great! Taking it slow is a good thing. You’re not wanted for any Nike posters in the next week, right? Then, I think it’s perfectly fair to ease back in. Wouldn’t want to hear the sad posts of worse injury, right? Woo!!!

Excellent! It’s great to hear that you’re running again. Don’t sweat the short duration, you’ll be able to increase that soon enough. I’m doing the same thing (slowly increasing duration), and I’ve discovered that I don’t have to be in a hurry. I’m in such a not-hurry, that you’ll no doubt surpass my efforts in the near future. ;)

Congratulations, Lara! When you’re ready to start a run/walk program, I’d totally recommend the C25K one on CoolRunning. That’s the one I did and it was great.

Just give it time and listen to you body, as everyone is saying. GOOD LUCK!!!
