finally, a break from the heat

I’m pretty sure July 2007 is going to be recorded as the hottest in the last 20 years. The last July I remember being this hot and humid was 1987 – the year of the Edmonton tornado. That tornado formed right over my head prior to touching down so I don’t mind saying that I get …a little nervous around this weather.

Anyway, with the head and humidity, it’s been tough slogging. I’m on vacation and have been running evenings to avoid the sun. For the most part, that strategy has worked but I had to miss my second run of the week on Saturday because of the combined effect of extreme heat, humidity and forest fire smoke making near impossible to breathe.

Last night was a very good run.

Time: 74 minutes
Distance: 9.04 miles
Pace: 8:10 min/mile
Avg HR: 154
Weather: 28C/82F but, with humidity “felt like” 33C/91F

I’m excited about that pace and heart rate given the temperature it was run in and am looking forward to seeing my paces at cooler temps. Looks like I’ll get my chance today since it’s a lot cooler today.

Tornados are nasty things. I saw one up close and personal when I lived in Regina back in 1978. It touched down on either side our house and skipped us. Thanks God!

I spent a summer in Alberta and I thought the weather was pretty interesting. I remember landing in Calgary in May and it was snowing. I remember it snowed that summer in July too…and you can see the huge storms brewing miles off on the horizon. It’s an awesome place to be.
