A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who’s beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

what does 16 pounds look like?

passion for running category: running on Saturday, April 21 2007

Here are some before/after pics. For those of you who are just tuning in, this is the result of 60 to 70 miles per week running for about six months. Click on the thumbnails for larger photos. I’m happy. Becoming fit again is one thing but this takes the cake. It’s almost motivating enough to get me into the gym to firm things up.

Just running, or running and diet?

That is outstanding! You look fantastic.

I am also interested in knowing if you changed your diet at all. I’m guessing that restricted food intake was not part of the program given the timeline.

If you didn’t restrict your eating you are a poster child for the benefits of exercise.

PS – I still think you should model the skirt again – if only you hadn’t given it away….

“Just running”? hehe. “just” running 70 miles a week?!

Just kidding with you Fat Runner. However, the miles are more than most people do – myself in the past included.

And, it’s all about calories in versus calories out.

To your question though, I don’t diet. I eat well and, as I’ve increased my mileage and intensity of workouts, I’ve even increased my intake when I felt it necessary. The key for me is that I’m burning a LOT of calories.

Two things though: 1) I don’t do evening snacking (except after my long runs) anymore, and 2) I eat a more healthy breakfast than I used to.

Jon, I didn’t send the pounds your way. I sent them to Ernie (of Bert and Ernie fame).

Yours came from someone else. :)

That’s great! I don’t run nearly as much as you do, but I haven’t lost a pound in 3 years of running!!

Great job Mark. I’m not ready to post my before/after photos. I’m not quite at the after yet but getting there, I can see a difference and its showing up in my speed & race times. Its a great year for both of us.

very impressive! i guess the key is to gradually build up to 60 or 70 miles per week and then maintain it. running that kind of mileage you’re burning about 7000 extra calories a week – about 2lbs if all other factors stayed the same.

keep up the great work,

steve
