I am totally amazed at how the improvements just keep coming and coming. Today’s “easy” effort…

Distance: 10.93 miles
Time: 1:28:30
Pace: 8:05 minutes per mile
Average Heart Rate: 162 bpm

Four things to note:

1. This is on my “run home” route which includes over a mile of steady hill climbing.
2. I ran that at the low top end of my “easy” heart rate training zone.
3. The pace is at what until about a week ago was my “hard” run pace.
4. I’m still running in winter-weight tights.

To quote an email I got from Andrew: “And to think ‘base’ training use to be considered boring.”

Very nice! See, all you have to do is run “easy.” The rest just falls into place. Oh, a ton of training and technique may have something to do with it too…

Hang on, Mark. How can HR 162 be an easy run?

Richard: Ha! Well said!

Thomas: I am a fast beater – I have a high max heart rate of 200. That puts my easy zone higher than most people’s. That said, I went and checked and I was actually wrong about one thing: 162 is at the top end of my “easy” zone.

Thomas,

One more thing just occured to me. What I/Andrew are calling “easy” may
not equal the term you use for what is essentially a middle effort. I have
another target range called “recovery” which I stay closer to the day
after my long runs and, whenever I need to pull back on intensity for
purposes of rest and healing.
