A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who’s beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

raced a mile and won!

passion for running category: running on Friday, February 23 2007

Well, I beat myself anyway. Today, since I was supposed to be in rest mode, I decided to throw one fast mile into the mix – just to see how fast I could comfortably run it.

I think my mile record prior to today was 6:25.

Today, without much difficulty at all, I clocked in at 6:19. Neat. I wonder if a six minute mile is in my future? I’m not sure if I’ll get many chances to try but it sure would be a fun side goal to shoot for besides the marathon.

The entire run (including the fast mile) amounted to the following:

Time: 59:40
Distance: 6.86 miles
Pace: 8:42 min/mile
Average Heart Rate: 166

I don’t know which is more astonishing: racing on a rest day or running 6:19 “without much difficulty at all.”

Ya know, the funny thing about it, Anne is that doing that little race was really …FUN! Running fast for those six or so minutes was really energizing AND restful in an odd way.

That really was what I was after on the run: To mix it up, have some fun and perform a little test.

I also didn’t push to an all out effort + I did take it fairly easy for the rest of the run. :)

6:19 my limited English tells me that it’s your PR (?) I thought you’re faster Mark! Weel, if you do it “without much difficulty” surely you will hit 6:00 soon. Thomas (Former Rubbish) mentioned in his Dublin report that for faster pace we use different group of muscles. This is a true statement, up to the sertain level. Guess that helped you.

Great job!! Tomorrow is supposed to be a rest day for me, but I’m thinking about going for a run, anyway.

This means that your VO2max is such that with the proper distance training, you will be able to run a 3:15 marathon. How soon? Well, it takes some time to build the endurance (months) but it’s nice to know the speed is there.
