long run

passion for running category: running on Monday, February 19 2007

Worst long run I’ve had this training season. Felt sluggish and had stiff calves for the first half. I had no energy from the start to when I packed it in 15 minutes earlier than scheduled.

Time: 2:15:30
Distance: 14.75 miles
Pace: 9:11 minutes/mile
Average Heart Rate: 146 bpm

Although it was an extremely frustrating run, it was not without something positive. It felt like I was running very slowly and my average heart rate was extremely low – as low as it has been in past runs paced at close to a minute per mile slower.

Positive aside, I traded emails with Coach Andrew where we agreed it’s a good idea to do my next several runs at recovery pace. It’s time for a bit of healing before the next stage in training which Andrew says is coming within the next several weeks.

good advice. I think it’s pretty clear that your body wants a little break. I’m sure you will roar back faster and stronger than ever.

a little break is always good . . . or at least if the coach says so.

Low heart rate average is probably the biggest indicator something is wrong. At least it is for me. Listen to coach and take some recovery.

Today is nice and warm and I’d LOVE to get outside but after this weekend of overdistance, I know I need to rest. It’s hard to stop the momentum.

You’ll bounce back, Mark. I’m glad to see you are running so well these days. This is just a blip on the screen :)

Mark,

Really, nice work. Just think about where you have been and where, come the running season, you will be. Keep in mind – you’re running in butt-cold temps, through snow and ice, and uphill (both ways)!

This is great off-season mileage and, despite how you feel right now, it’s going to pay off HUGE!

Keep up the great work.

Oh yeah, CRN rocks!
