winter finally got the best of me

passion for running category: running on Saturday, February 17 2007

For the first time this winter, yesterday I wussed out on a run because of the weather.

What’s unusual about my wussing out is it came when the weather warmed up – as opposed to all the other days/weeks/months of cold and snow I’d endured prior to yesterday.

So, if not the snow or cold, then what stopped me you ask? Well, all the snow we’ve had is now starting to melt so I ran through quite a bit of slush on Thursday. Cold, wet slush. My feet were wet and frozen by the time I got home.

Friday was warmer and slushier so all I had to look forward to was more of the same. I did not want that so…

I ditched.

As I shared with Andrew in an email, ditching yesterday’s run seemed funny to me with all the cold, snowy bitterness I’d endured up till then but I guess it just goes to show you how trying the long winter has been. Totally mentally draining.

I ran today. Nice and easy.

Do you wear crampons or any other sort of “gripper” on your shoes? We had some snow and ice down here and I was slipping and sliding all over the place. Saw some joggers but it just looked as though they had normal running shoes on. I have no idea how they managed to run on ice.

Dude, it’s one thing to be dry and cold, but wet and cold? No way. Too harsh. Coming from a cycling background, we had tons of clothing and equipment to stave off the cold, but the wet will always find you.

Slush is pernicious stuff. Not only do your feet get wet but if you slip and fall then you are all wet and sooooo cold. It’s okay to ditch once in a while.

My feet got soaking wet when I ran on Thursday. Thankfully it wasn’t too cold out so I survived. I’d of been fine except for that one spot where the slush was black and grey. In the dark it looked like pavement, boy was I wrong. I landed one foot, thankfully only one foot in an ankle deep slush puddle.

Hopefully it will be dryer for my run tonight.
