A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

The improvements are coming almost daily now. Here is a comparison between Friday’s versus today’s “hard” efforts:

Friday’s Pace: 8:20 min/mile with an avg heart rate of 170
Today’s Pace: 8:01 min/mile with an avg heart rate of 166

That’s twenty seconds faster per mile at four bpm less. Other details around today’s run:

Distance: 7.48 miles
Time: 60 minutes

The footing was poor today (it snowed overnight). Winter means I’m running in constrictive layers of clothing often on poor footing – makes me wonder what I’d be capable of doing wearing shorts on a nice spring day.

In other news, Lori happened to see me returning from my run today. Upon walking in the door, I was greeted with “wow, I saw you running – you’re a fast runner!”. I promptly walked up and gave her a big thank-you hug but the warm feeling vanished with Lori’s next words: “Ewwww…you stink. Go take a shower”.

Wow, sounds great. I hope the improvements keep snowballing. But I’d also be wary of placing too much emphasis on such large differences over such a short period of time. Maybe you’re having a mini-peak and will reach a plateau and frustratingly hover there for a few weeks. Or maybe I’m full of sh*t, should shut my noise-hole and continue to applaud and encourage you. Yeah, that’s a better plan.

Congrats! I’m jealous of your rapid success. I hope you ride this improvement wave to your goals! (Now I’m mixing metaphors… snowballs, waves? Good grief I should totally abort this comment!)

Thanks Kurt,

I am sure I will have some plateaus. I’ve had them before and, having trained for 6 other marathons, know how much work it takes to improve.

But, for now, I am improving and that’s pretty exciting. :)
