I shorted my run by seven minutes today. Reason: Treating that toe thing with a bit of TLC. Seven minutes is the amount of time I would have had to run past my house upon returning from work. Given the fact that my toe started out a bit sore at the beginning of the run, I thought cutting those minutes out would not hurt my cardio and just might help the toe. Wishful thinking?

Seven minutes aside, I was really happy with the toe and with the run overall. As mentioned, the toe was a bit iffy at the beginning of the run but it loosen up a lot within 25 minutes of starting.

And I have definitely gone through a cardiovascular adaptation. Today, I once again thought I was scaling back the pace to a fair degree but it turns out I was only 7 seconds off last week’s pace (edit: duh, last week I ran these at 8:34 pace so it turns out I did run this one at a much easier pace).

In other news, I need new shoes. And not for the reason you might think. Most people replace their shoes when the structure begins to break down but my shoes have no structure really to speak of. They are like slippers built onto a very hard, thin rubber sole.

So, if wear isn’t the reason, what is? Oddly enough, my feet have grown more muscular this past couple months. This has resulted in my shoes becoming too tight – especially in the toe box. Two pairs of my beloved h-streets are so tight that my big toes are getting jammed up and have to curl a bit and that’s not good for someone who runs on the balls of his feet!

Today, I ran in my one pair of shoes that are not too tight and everything felt great. Surprise, surprise. Even better news is I found an eBay merchant who gave me a smokin’ deal on four pairs of h-streets (click on the thumbnail to enlarge) so I should be well-stocked for a few years.

You cut it by 7 minutes?? That, I am sure, is okay. Gotta take care of yourself!

Have you bought shoes off eBay before? Had good experience? I’m guessing you stick with models you’ve determined already work for you and just look for replacements online.

I’ve just started visiting your site… how does your HR on this run compare with other similar runs?

Muscular feet, eh? Maybe you should start a different website for those.

My rule for replacing shoes is when the shoe can’t be worn anymore because it has a significant tear. I’ve got a little over 1500 miles on my shoes. I’ve had them for eight months and I’d love to get a year out of them.

Adeel,

I think I’ll leave that website to the barefoot running crowd. :)

I think your shoe rule is a good one and I bet one could get a lot of miles on shoes. 1500 miles is really impressive.

How many did you get on your H-Streets?

To be honest, I am not sure. I’ve been rotating two pairs (the two that are now too tight to run in).

My best guess would be a few hundred miles on each pair BUT they are both basically brand new – I just can’t wear them any longer because they are very tight and cause me pain.

I think the real test will be these next pairs because I should not outgrow them.
