the faster and longer i run, the faster and longer i can run

passion for running category: running on Tuesday, February 6 2007

Distance: 9.59
Time: 1:29:30
Pace: 9:20 min/mile
Average Heart Rate: 151
Footing: 50% ok + 50% icy/snowy

The Good: I thought I’d reduced the pace substantially today. I thought I’d record today’s “easy” run at about a 9:45. I was wrong. On poor footing and including over a mile of climbing, I ran it in a 9:20 minute/mile pace – without hardly breaking a sweat.
The Bad: The reason I set out to reduce today’s intensity was because I was feeling super-drained after yesterday’s long run and because my calves were pretty stiff – they were slightly stiff after Sunday’s run, more stiff after yesterday’s long run and quite stiff today.
The Ugly: Although aerobically I felt like things were easy today, in addition to the stiff calves, a few nigglies surfaced at various points during the run. For the most part they were really minor rusty, creaky thingies but one bugged me more than the others. It was a pain under my right big toe that came and went without rhyme or reason. The last time I had that pain was about two months ago. It happened coincidentally after a few days of increased intensity. The good news is it went away after only a day or two of decreased intensity so…

…unless I’m feeling a lot better, I will be dialing down the intensity (pace) of tomorrow’s run.

Nice work on today’s run. Good thinking for playing it safe tomorrow. Happy running.
