on describing today’s wonderful long run

passion for running category: running on Monday, January 15 2007

The training is really coming together. I think I’m very close to the next stage of increasing my long run to 150 minutes (2.5 hours). I might be a week or two off. I have to check. Anyway…

Today’s run was the kind of run we runners dream about. It was …as close to being effortless as I can imagine.

I started off nice and slow and, by about mile 9 of 12, let the legs take over. They really had a mind of their own today. It became difficult to keep my heart rate under 160bpm – not because I was feeling effort but because going faster felt effortless.

As I came into my final mile grinning like a Cheshire cat, I searched for words to describe the run. Of course, as it has appeared above, “effortless” came to mind but that word seemed inadequate.

And then two words popped into my head:

Fluid: Like water running gently downhill, and
Perpetual: Movement that spawns more movement.

It was truly that wonderful and I deserved it. :)

Time: 2:00:00
Distance: 12.4 miles
Pace: 9:40 min/mile (I’m sure the second 1/2 of the run was an even 9:00)
Avg Heart Rate: 149 (well within training target)

You gotta love when those adjectives are attached to a run. Great job!

Looking good there. I’m sure you could to 2.5 hours right now. It’s never as hard as you think it is, once you get down to it.

Where I come from, we call it “flow.”

And it does sound like you deserved this.
