It’s been winter here since halloween. We’ve had lots of snow with temperatures ranging from -5 to -15 Celcius (23 to 5 Fahrenheit).

But, at about -18C/0F without windchill, yesterday’s run was quite a bit colder. I returned from that run with a bit of numbness in my face and lips. Time to break out the balaclava.

It’s -17C today and it’s snowing to boot. But we’re not done yet folks because the forecast for Saturday, Sunday and Monday are -27C/-17F, -25C/-13F, and -28C/-18F.

Canadian winters are a barrel of fun. :)

Update: It is now forecasted to be -28C tomorrow (friday).

Thank goodness for the inventor of the balaclava! I have two of those myself for the cold weather. Run Good!

I spent some years in Austria and have lived through quite a few cold winters. But -28C is colder than anything I ever experienced. I don’t think I’d go running in those conditions.

Thomas, running in the cold is all about preparation. You have to use three, thin, moisture wicking layers on your torso with the top layer being a wind resistance layer. On the bottom, you need one or two good layers – especially in the crotch area!

Finally (and of course), you need good gloves/mits (I often wear two layers), a hat, and a balaclava.

When it gets that cold, you can even wear ski goggles – not really because your eyes freeze (they won’t) – but because they get irritating icicles on them.

Yep, so cold yer boogers freeze on the first breath in. So cold tears freeze on your eyelashes. So cold you get brain-freeze headaches if you leave your forehead uncovered. Too cold to smile – your teeth ache from the chill.

It wasn’t QUITE that cold here this morning, but there’s always the weekend…
