A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

passion for running category: running on Thursday, November 2 2006

I had a bit of a setback and was forced to take several days off (shinsplints on left leg).

The heart and lungs and soul were ready for the amount and pace of running I was doing. My muscles and bones apparently were not.

So, the plan is to back off on the speed component of intensity – defined by Andrew as the combination of speed, distance, frequency and time running.

So, I’m dropping speed for a while and doing my first week over.

Another lesson I’m learning is to do better daily assessment of where I am. I should have reacted (by decreasing some speed) to the oncoming shinsplints sooner.

I feel fortunate that I’ve set myself a very long-term goal.

Ok. Onward. Today’s run was a very slow 60 minute pleasure cruise. Everything felt (and feels) very good. No B.S.

I’m always amazed at how infrequently the mind and body are in synch. Yes, listen to the parts screaming loudest. You’ve come too far.

All part of the learning cycle. Not the last issue either. Keep alert, have confidence. “Long term” is the operative phrase. You’ve handled this first obstacle wonderfully. Doing great!
