baseline + some mileage goofiness
Read the post right before this one to get an idea where the thinking for this post is coming from…

I ran 60 minutes very slowly today. LSD slow. It’s a pace I feel I could run at for a long, long time. We shall see. Anyway, here’s the route saved on mapmyrun.
6.68 miles/10.75 kilometers run in a 9:08 per mile/5:40 minutes per kilometer pace is a good starting point for base building runs.
Wanna see another route I’m considering? Here’s a route I could use to run to and from work.
It’s almost exactly nine miles. At a 9:08 minute per mile pace, that’s about one hour twenty two minutes. I’ve been running for that long lately with no problem whatsoever.
At a slow pace I’m pretty sure I could run that at least once a day plus I’m thinking I could build up to running it both ways a few times a week. Here’s a thought:
Monday: 9 miles (one way)
Tuesday: 18 miles (two way)
Wednesday: See Monday
Thursday: See Tuesday
Friday: See Monday
Saturday: I dunno
Sunday: I dunno
If I ran one way each week day (nine miles), that would give me 45 weekly miles of base building. It I worked up to running that route each way three days a week, that would add on another 27 miles for a total of 72 miles. That’s not including a long run on weekends. Let’s say the long run was 15 miles minimum. That would bring my total mileage to 87. I’d have to check but I’m pretty sure that would be way more miles than I’ve ever consistently run.
That’s not a plan. Heck, that’s not anything. It’s just throwing stuff out there + if I was to do 18 miles on Tuesdays & Thursdays, I’d have to build up to it. Again, keep in mind I’d be doing all these miles at a slow pace for several months. Lots of time to build up from one way travel to two way travel. In the beginning, it would be easy to buy a buss pass and hop on/off wherever I needed to. Really easy.
One thing’s for sure — it would give me the mileage I need to build a great cardio base without creating havoc with family life.
Thoughts? Am I nuts?

edit: been doing some reading and it looks like I may be better off running longer a couple of times a week than doubling up. comments?

I don’t know what sort of mileage you’ve done in the past, but 87 miles is a lot of running. Operating on the basis of logistics makes sense, but trust me, I have all the time in the world to run but it has been very tough to run 60 mpw or more consecutively. A week at 100 km or so is always followed by one at 80, though I was better at the consistency it when doing less intensity.
It might make more sense to run as much as you can, building sensibly, and seeing where it takes you, at least in the short-term. I do think that a year of solid training will do wonders for you, whether or not it gets you to Boston. A half hour is a big drop, but so what? Get working.
