reason number 998 why i love apple computers

passion for running category: running on Tuesday, October 3 2006

My family currently owns two iMacs. iMac #1 is the iMac g5 — the 1st iMac to have the computer built into the same space as the monitor. iMac #2 is the newer Intel chip version.

iMac #1 inexplicably conked on us the other night. Just won’t turn on at all.

So I took it into to our local Apple Reseller – Westworld Computers for a look-see. The tech guy (Dan) took my info down and told me he’d call to let me know what he could find out.

Not even 30 minutes later I got a call from Dan saying he’d already diagnosed the problem. The power supply and logic board were fried and needed replacing.

So I’m thinking, “Yikes! Not good” until the guy on the phone tells me this was a problem with a faulty component on the 1st generation G5 iMac and that Apple was footing 100% of the bill — on a two year old computer.

And then he asked if I needed any kind of replacement computer while we wait for ours to be replaced.

I love you, Apple.

I use a G5 at work and have not had a single issue with it. Thankfully! Of the 3 G4′s that I used (pre 4/06), 1 power supply failed and two hard drives failed. The Quadra 840AV (circa 1995), the hard drive failed. And, the power adapter on my G3 Power Book needs a wiggle or two to keep connected.

Their treatment of the G3 iBooks was similarly good – 3 years after purchase. Apple rocks.

Now, if only I can convince the wife we need a 24″ iMac to replace the TV…
