describing the sensation of ‘lightness’

passion for running category: form, pose running method, running on Thursday, August 10 2006

I often get questioned on what it feels like to run using the Pose Method. Here’s the simple answer that just moments ago occurred to me:

Do you know the feeling of lightly touching on stairs as you go down them? There is that fine line between going too slow — when your feet begin landing more heavy and flat-footed — and going that speed where they just tightly touch the stairs.

That’s what Pose Method runners try for — that kind of quickness and lightness.

It’s all about quick cadence (turnover) and lifting the foot up almost before it touches the ground. And that kind of lightness can only be accomplished on the balls of one’s feet.

Does that make sense to you?

I can’t imagine trying to change a running stride I have been doing for so many years, but I guess if you never try something new you’ll never know if you couldn’t be better.

I only run like that in my dreams. It’s a start; now maybe I should try it in real life, eh?

To contrast completely with Elizabeth, stride is something that is a constant variable for me. Something I’m always playing with, tweaking, changing for the terrain, the next distance goal, whatever. Honing my stride keeps my legs and feet from hurting me.

You know, I’ve been trying this — but find it makes me go faster than I want. What am I doing wrong, do you think?

Like Karen, I too play with stride. It also depends on terrain and incline. Plus I like to run with music as I use it as a pacing tool, and my stride then varies with the beats per minute of the tune :).
