down another pound+30 fivefinger minutes

passion for running category: running, running apparel, running gear on Tuesday, April 25 2006

I dropped another pound and am down to 174. That makes four pounds in four weeks which seems a little excessive to me. What do you think? I have been doing a lot of running lately but, still.

In other news, I’m continuing to test the vibram fivefingers shoes. Today was another 30 minute jaunt into the river valley - same as last time with 15 minutes on pavement and 15 on the dirt, gravel and wood chip trails. I had a blast on those trails!

I took it pretty easy today (had to after yesterday’s long run) and focused on relaxed form. The vibrams performed exceptionally well, and the bonus is that the blisters I got in them last week did not return on today’s run.

Today’s run solidifies my positive review of the shoe but - be warned because this is not a shoe you can just jump in to - you have to begin slowly with short durations of walking or running.

I’m sorry, I just can’t get over how funny those shoes look!! Any chance of you wearing them with your skirt??

4 lbs. in 4 weeks is so not excessive. A healthy goal is to lose 1-2 lbs. per week. You are right on track.

If you are trying to lose weight, 1 lb a week is perfect. If you are losing 1 lb a week and NOT trying to lose it, then you have a problem.

those are some funny-looking shoes!

Look at you, just musing about losing weight and it’s dropping off like flies. Can I kick you … is there a kick button??

:)

About those shoes … would they be able to keep your feet warmer at all, ie. so you could extend the barefoot season in Alberta?

First a question, Do you have to wear toe socks with those, to keep the rubber from sticking to the skin? Second, I don’t care what Vibram calls em, they are not “shoes” and you should berate them as much as you did Nike and New Balance, in the interest of fairness and all!

Hey Russ,

Nope. No socks. They actually do have an insole - a very thin, durable insole.

With regard to berating them, I won’t because of how they differ from Nike and the New Balance ad I was critical of:

First, Nike: The reason I was critical of Nike is because they tout the Nike Free as a barefoot shoe that is better than being barefoot and I can assure you - it is not. It is a terrible shoe with a big clunky heel. It is extremely poorly designed for a company saying it EMULATES/COMES CLOSE TO barefooting.

Vibram: This shoe is DAMN close to being barefoot. It is not a traditional shoe like the ones the big companies like Nike have made for over 20 years. It is a MINIMALIST shoe that DOES emulate/come close to barefooting.

New Balance: My critique of the New Balance ad wasn’t really against the shoe as much as it was the portrayal of running form in the ad. In the ad, they showed a barefoot runner HEEL STRIKING and that just AIN’T gonna happen. Noone who runs barefoot will heel strike for more than 20 feet. The problem I have with the portrayal is it is being used as the basis for selling a structured shoe. If they want to show heel striking, they should show it while being done in a shoe. In other words, the heel striking they showed in that ad have nothing to do with barefoot running and is a misrepresentation, in my humble opinion.

Comments?

Thanks Russ. :)

Russ,

i think it might be important for me to state that I am not opposed to any particular kind of shoe. what I am opposed to is the apparent misrepresentation I’ve been seeing in products and advertising.

Also, it’s important to note that I reviewed this shoe as a barefoot/minimalist shoe.

Can you really run in those shoes? I just saw them for the first time the other day, and I thought about white water rafting, but running?

What do you think the Fivefingers could do for overpronation? I walk rather than run and love to be barefoot. Always thought of and tried corrective shoes and insoles without much success.

Thanks,
Maria
