passion for running category: nothing to do with running on Monday, April 10 2006

I’m not running till later today so I thought I’d plug another passion of mine…

I LOVE Apple Computers. Yes, I am a true-blue Apple GEEK. Why? There are numerous reasons but three of the best are that they are virtually worry free virus/security-wise, they are super easy to use and because they are so reliable.

And now, there really is no reason for not switching. Why? Because now when you buy an intel powered Mac (e.g. an iMac), you have THREE computers in one - you have Unix under the hood (for you uber-geeks), you have the BEST operating system in the world (Apple’s OS X) and now you can even boot right into Windows XP - and that takes care of most people’s worries around switching - that they won’t be able to run their favorite Windows program.

Check out the details for this latest feature here.

Unix under the hood.

Linux is for barefoot people with ponytails (and cheap folks)… Similar to Unix, but hand-rolled. Unix is for anal types.

Other than that - Woo Hoo! Although I am going to feel slimy dropping the cash to buy XP when I get my new MacBook.

I just wanted to mention Mac’s are not virtually virus- or worm-free. Apple’s had to dish out a large number of security patches this year, and some of those holes are being exploited by worms. The malware just doesn’t get the big media play because most organizations, especially those running critical infrastructure, remain Windows shops.

That said, I think OS X is indeed the best OS out there right now.

Anne, how many people do you know who use a mac and have gotten a virus? I know of none. Comparatively, almost everyone I know on Windows has had those problems and is in pretty much constant concern for getting them.

Of course, no OS is 100% impervious - my point is one that is made in relative terms. Macs ARE virtually virus free in comparison to Windows systems.

But thanks for tempering my passion. :)

I’ll let you win this round, but I think most Mac OS users that have been hit by a worm or virus are oblivious to them because there are not media alerts. And most of the ones I’ve reported on don’t do anything obvious to suggest a machine’s infected. But, compared to the Linux lovers who falsely boast a more secure OS, Mac users do indeed have a more virtual virus-free machine….and anyone is virus-free compared to Windows, that’s for sure.
