A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who’s beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

not feeling very deserving

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, December 14 2005

I was honored to see my blog make it on the Top Ten Sources for Running website but I can’t help but feel (at this moment) rather undeserving. A runner who isn’t running? Hmmm…

Perhaps, it is the battle I’m engaged in to return to running and become a better, injury-free runner that is important?

If there’s one stat I know very well, it’s that 1/3 of runners are injured every year, so I hope that my not giving up (I will not give up) and eventually winning this battle (I will win) will inspire others to forge on also.

Are you sticking with me during these lean running days for that purpose? Are you rooting for the underdog? Are you relating to this battle and, in doing so, rooting for yourself?

We all have our struggles and I strongly believe they are put in our lives to help us grow so I am wondering about the challenges you are facing.

What’s your battle and how are you doing with it? I want to hear from you.

I trained hard, sucked, and now I suck a little less for a variety of reasons. Keep plugging away.

first off, as the blogfather, how could you not deserve kudos and a spot in any top 10 running blog list?

my current battle is with running healthy. i’m walking a fine line right now between pushing my training very hard and being injured. so far, i’m staying on the healthy side, but it’s requiring serious discipline in the form of stretching, hydrating, rest and a proper diet. sounds easy, but life can get in the way!

Mark,
I can identify with your situation. I am having some what of a ‘mid-life crisis’ in coming to terms with the fact that I am getting injured more often, so I have to assume its because of my age (37). Stay strong, its these tough times that define you (us).

I’ve said this before, Mark. But I’ll say it again. There are some lucky people who never get injured, and there are those of us who seem to get injured often. I have learned a lot about myself, how much patience I have, and how great it feels to stick it out and come back again and again. Hang in there.

I think my biggest battle in the moment is my swimming, I’m still a klutz in the pool. I do not have a God given talent, I have to work really hard at it. I also have a lot of outside pressures (wife, work, etc.) in the moment that are trying to erode my running efforts. On the positive side I have been able to avoid any serious injury so far in my last couple years of running. I hope my luck holds. If not I know the Blogfather will be there for me!

i’m with you. i ran 2 miles yesterday…TWO, and my knee throbbed for an hour afterwards… (probably shouldnt have done another 1.5 in the evening…but its ONE MILE. come on!!)

its so frusterating when all you wanna do is get out there and get some mileage in, and everyone around you seems to bounce back after their own m’thons… i feel your pain man. but, we will live to run another day!

just, maybe not today!

come on Mark, suck up the modesty and roll around in the “being mentioned out in blogospere glory”! It’s not like you’re sitting around eating bonbons and compiling flab. You’re plenty healthy, cross-training and at the helm of our running blogger ship. u da man, mon.

Oh yeah, I forgot to answer your question: “What?s your battle and how are you doing with it?” My battle? Thursday runs. The Thursday after a race kills me – the whole run involves working out stiff stuff and loosening up whatever I zealously over-exerted on the weekend.

Doing about it? Well this week I’m running on FRIDAY ;)

1. You’re a runner, plain and simple.
2. Resources? Dude, you are key – connecting runners across the world and generally coming up with a new and cool way for us to stay motivated about the time we need it.

Rock on…

Just coming back after a 5 week layoff with a possible stress fracture in the left tibia. Running every other day for the time being with a bit of pool running mixed in. Congratulations on the top 10.

I am totally impressed with you, as always. What an awesome post. My “thing” is kind of involved, but basically teenagers at school and gangs and such. I think we’re over the hill though. Thanks for reaching out!

Modesty befits you. Fame follows you. Running again awaits you. In time. With perseverence and sensibility. You have it all. Thanks Mark, for being our blogfather.

Blogfather,

My current battle is training in lovely New England for the Boston Marathon and raising money for cancer research with a new born in the house. Training on 3 hours of sleep and staying healthy…there isa challenge. If anyone has advice, feel free to comment on my blog- longcoldrun.blogspot.com
