I read an article a few years back about a similar runner. I think she was from Montreal, and for the life of me I can't remember her name...anyhow...she said she just woke up one morning and decided not to run any more. I don't think she was even remotely close to being as successful as Komen but nonetheless, it seems strange to just drop off the map.

Komen is one of the most intriguing runners in history, mostly because of how brief his career was. He ran 3:29, 7:20, 7:24 indoors, and 12:39 within the span of a couple of years. Only two people (Geb, Bekele) have run faster than his 5k time. Even if his 3k time is beaten, it will be even harder to run 7:24 indoors.

For someone that talented (all those marks are better or the same as Geb's), he was done by the age of 22. For comparison, he's a couple of years younger than Geb and seven years younger than Paul Tergat. He's only 29 today.

From what I recall, not only did he lose his appetite for training once he became very rich, but he also mismanaged his money and lives relatively normally today. He actually rabbited Chicago one of these years, unthinkable for someone who was one of the best the world ever saw.
