I think it took a few years and during training for my first marathon before I realized that I ate what my body needed and not just whatever was available! So being “in touch” comes with time for most.

I think I became more attuned to my body when I was actively studying martial arts but I had lost that awareness for a number of years until I began running. Now I’m regaining that awareness.

Seems like a skill that could be used to correct posture, too. Damn computer!

I train alone and don’t use an iPod, Walkman, etc. Even when running on the treadmill I don’t have a TV, radio or magazine for company. Throughout the run I am monitoring how I feel – experimenting with strides, arm swings, breathing, etc. or doing ‘split time mathematics’ in my head.

I’m very aware of my body – something this size is hard to ignore. :-)
