video of me pose running

passion for running category: pose running method, running on Monday, May 2 2005

I’ve placed a video clip of me running pose style here. There are five fly-bys in total. The first four are all about the same – sort of mid-speed. I’m crankin’ it up a bit in the last one.

I wish I could share the “before” clip, but it hasn’t yet arrived from the POSE people. I’ll share it when it comes but I can assure you my form was awful compared to what you will see in this clip.

I shared this clip here on the Posetech forum where I got some great feedback. Generally, the consensus was that I am doing well but need to relax a bit more. I did get some great specific advice also but my favorite comment came from a veteran named Jack who closed by saying I was “born to run”. It sure is nice to get that kind of encouragement! :D

Once you have looked at the video at normal speed, make sure you take a look at it in slow motion and frame-by-frame. That’s when you’ll really be able to see where I am landing, leaning etc. Slow motion is definitely where the most can be learned when analyzing form.

The video is in mpeg-4 file format which Apple’s Quicktime plays quite nicely.

OH! And make sure you check this clip of Dr. Romanov going fast! Man, can that guy fly! And notice how little his upper body and head move while he is going that fast. Amazing huh?

Now that’s neat. Not only do we now know what you sound like but we have seen you run and yet never seen you in person. Isn’t the net wonderful!

Thanks, Mark. It’s so helpful to *see* what you’ve been saying. You do look comfortable, like the pose is a good fit for you. I see now what you mean about kicking your legs up behind you. And I agree with Dawn. How cool to put it all together!

Now *that* was very coool! I never really understood the descriptions, so that was very helpful. You look very natural running that way. I know you have nothing better to do, so maybe you could make a little video of you *not* using the Pose running so I can see what that looked like. I can see that you’re doing something very specific in the video, but I’m not really sure what it would look like if you *weren’t* doing those things. That’s so cool! – Mia

My ‘puter doesn’t like your video formats so I’ll just have to agree with previous comments.

Thanks you guys. I’m glad you can actually see something even if you are not quite able to put a finger on exactly what the something *is*.

Mia, I will get a clip up of me running in my old style shortly. Once I do that, I will try to provide some sort of guide which describes what is different between the two types of running. :)

Now all I need is someone to come and video tape me so I can see if I’m doing it right! You are such a helpful guy. The info you post is awesome!

Wow. Thanks Mark. I was just thinking about my form this morning, and when I focused on what my feet are doing, I can tell that I still ‘touch down’ with my heel…and watching you NOT hit the ground with your heel is awe-inspiring.

Way to go, Bro.

I thought of a question for you this morning when I was on the treadmill. Do you employ the POSE technique while walking? Would you recommend it for racewalkers? Why or why not? Why is this recommendation the same/different than the recommendations for runners? (Maybe this is a post unto itself). Over to you! Interesting clips, btw!!

Thanks for putting that up, Mark. You certainly look very fluid in your movement, and the evil heel strike has been vanquished.

That is so cool! The kicking back of your heels reminds me of how the Kenyan runners look, but at the same time, it seems like you’re landing flat on your feet rather than rolling. Hmm, interesting!

Very very cool that you would pick up on that Rachel because many people familiar with the pose frequently mention how Kenyan’s NATURALLY do a pose style of running. Paula Radcliffe also runs in this fashion.

Thanks! :)

There is a definite POULTRA like quality in the first fly by..but you are VERY fluid in the subsequent ones…your feet seem……light? Lovely.

I clicked to your blog about a month ago looking up “Pose,” and I enjoy reading all about your progress. If it weren’t for that lily white skin, from watching that video I’d think you were Kenyan! :-) Great blog.

THAT was enormously helpful Mark! Thanks a bunch. You do look a little tense upper body and when I read the thread I noticed the other folks mentioned the same thing. I have a HUGE problem with upper body tension. You know the potato chip exercise to practice being relaxed? Never make it more than 1Km and its all crumbly in my hand.

Oh I didn’t finish ~embarassed face~ what I wanted to say is that you look so relaxed and light…it gives me hope because I was thinking all my upper body tension was making it impossible for me to ‘get it.’ From watching you I get the impression I need to be looking at all the little parts AND the big picture…not just the latter. So, once again, thanks for the clip!!
