panic and mayhem

passion for running category: running on Thursday, April 7 2005

So, yesterday I had a bit of a scare when I found out Aaron and I were not on the registration list for the POSE clinic. Thankfully, a very gracious Dr Svetlana Romanov came to the rescue and confirmed our attendance.

Then, I went to locate my birth certificate which I would need (along with driver’s license) to get through U.S. customs. First, let me just say that I SAW my birth certificate only two months ago. At that time, I remember putting it in a safe place where I’d be able to find it. But do you think I can remember WHERE that safe place IS?

NOOOOOO!

I searched for FOUR count’em FOUR (4!) hours and went to bed with an extreme amount of panic. Why so much panic you ask?

a) The Service Alberta website told me a new birth certificate takes two to three days.
b) I don’t HAVE two to three days.
c) If you don’t have a birth certificate, you definitely need a passport to get into the U.S.
d) You can’t get a passport from Canada Customs without a birth certificate.

So this was me after learning all that: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I came into work where the gal who sits next to me and who does a LOT of travelling asked if I was all set for my trip. I immediately, and with great verve, repeated the exclamatory expression above. That was when Sheila kicked into action.

Long story short: I ran to one of these in downtown Edmonton, paid $40 and will have a new birth certificate by 2:00 p.m. today.

So now this is me:

I have NO idea who this guy is. I found him using this. The picture is very appropriately named relieved.jpg.

What an excellent post for the visual learner. :)

Hilarious! I had almost the same thing happen trying to fly with my daughter last year … couldn’t find the “safe place”?!? You’re very lucky to get a birth certificate in such a short time … whew!

You realize that the missing birth certificate will reveal itself moments after you receive the new one?

I really dislike it when I put things in a safe place. They always become safe from my searching eyes and hands.

I ran a 6.5 minute mile yesterday by leaning forward, using my hamstrings, turning my feet over rapidly, and landing lightly. I was on a downhill slope so it doesn’t REALLY count but even so, I think that’s the fastest mile I have ever run. I’m pretty sure I did it because I’ve been trying to apply some of the things you’ve been talking about. So, thanks!

Have a safe trip and have a wonderful time at the clinic!

Arrgh! I feel your pain. Last year, shortly before we went to Vegas for our wedding my mom (who was not born in Canada) discovered that not on ly had she lost her citizenship card, but she had also lost her birth certificate from her native country… Many a tear was shed over the fear that she wouldn’t be able to come to my wedding, we even thought of cancelling it. But alas! We were able to expedite the birth certificate, citizenship papers AND her passport. Let’s just hope she doesn’t lose them again!

Gee, not so funny, but coincidentaly one of our group heading down to Tampa made the same discovery just days before we headed out. She was born in Ontario. Luckily her brother still lived there, picked up the new one and met her at the airport. Whew.

It also happened to me a few years ago. We were getting married in Seattle and somehow mine was lost. Not in that “safe place”. I managed to get a new on couriered within 24 hours from New Brunswick for a few extra bucks.

Glad yours was also resolved. Have a blast!!! :-)
