a new hero

passion for running category: heroes, inspiration, running, running movies on Wednesday, March 23 2005

He’s not Superman, not Batman, not Spiderman, not Captain Kirk and not Rocky Balboa. In fact, he isn’t a hero of the fictional variety at all. My new hero was an actual person. An american runner named Steve Prefontaine.

It’s 11:50 p.m. and I’ve just finished watching Without Limits - a movie about the tragically short life of a truly great runner and a man of indomitable spirit.

Without Limits inspired and overwhelmed me. I’d heard the story and read short snippets about “Pre” but this movie brought the man to life and gave me a lot to think about.

He was the embodiment of tenacity. He refused to quit. He hated doing anything less than his absolute best and he fought tooth and nail for every step of every race he ran.

The movie was produced by Tom Cruise so you know the production is top-notch. Plus, there are some other great stories in it in addition to Prefontaine’s. Most notably, the character of Bill Bowerman (played by Donald Sutherland) is quite compelling. Bowerman was Steve Prefontaine’s famous coach (he coached many other runners), and the man who eventually founded Nike.

I really wish this post could do the movie and Steve Prefontaine justice but it can’t so I’ll just say this: If you like being inspired - especially when it comes to running and reaching your potential, do yourself a favour and see this movie because it’s GREAT!

“Pre” joins Zatopek on a list of runners I admire. I wonder who will be next!

Very powerful story. One of my very favorite movies. They have another version where Billy Crudup plays Pre, but since I loved w/o limits so much I hesitate to watch it.

A friend gave me a copy of Prefontaine (dvd) just prior to my marathon. Great story - his dedication is inspiring, even if his cockiness was a little overbearing. I guess when one is THAT good, cockiness helps one keep an edge.

got both version of those on dvd a while back. pre was an amazing runner, and i can only imagine what a force he’d have been on the running scene today if he hadn’t died.

pre is the reason i cheer for the ducks for any college sport.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen Prefontaine (the other movie) a few years ago and enjoyed it. Without Limits was great, I love movies like this.

Pre was truely an inspiration, He’s one of the reasons why I keep running and once I read the book “Pre” I took off flying…from being a member on the cross country team and JUST making it onto varsity, after reading that book, I put in 300 miles in the summer, took the 3rd spot on the varsity team and ended up helping the team get a 7th place finish at state. This year, I got a 16:27 in my cc conference race in 3rd place and did amazing in track. I was wearing a Marshfield jersey (Pre’s high school one with the number 13 and all on it) to a track practice and this freshman ( who has a bright future ahead of him for running) comes up and asks me “where did you get that?” I said “it’s steve prefontaines” and he said “was he a senior or used to go here” and my jaw dropped…don’t worry though we’re finding a way to get this kid attached to steve just as everyone else in the world is..
