A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather - a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who’s beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank some people. My gratitude comes from understanding that this RBF thing is NOT something Aaron and I created on our own. Rather, the RBF exists because people believe in something greater and actively contribute to it’s growth and development.

Case in point: Marie just made us a terrific new RBF button for linking to the RBF Directory in style. Here’s the button: RBF Button! Copy this link if you want your blog to get the image from us instead of having to upload it on your server. Thanks Marie!

Case in point: Jeff has, with great enthusiasm and generosity, suggested we start planning a First Annual RBF Fest - a run/race for RBF members. The idea being to get as many members as possible to one place for a run. In other words, a place for us to actually meet face-to-face, have a run and a terrific party! Thanks Jeff, you totally rock!

As an aside, I have taken FAR too long to act on Jeff’s suggestion. Please take a look at his original post on the subject and then go to this link on the Complete Running Bulletin Board. Let’s get talking about this!

Finally: The Running Chick Dianna’s contribution. Did you know Dianna was the first to call us the Running Blog Family? Dianna has for some time been trying to get Runner’s World to write about the RBF and has now taken the task on herself. Runner’s World asked her to write and submit something about us. She tells me she’s almost done. Great job Sister!

These are just three outstanding examples (I’m sure there are more!) of people seeing themselves as part of something larger. Nice huh?

Spread the word on these good works. If you tell two people and they tell people and so on and so on… ;)

I think we need to consider the dark side of all this.

After Dianna’s article gets published, then we see a huge upswing in page traffic. And then we head off for the first get together only to discover that the entire running world has planned to meet us there and get autographs and photos and pieces of our clothes.

Our fun run together turns into a giant media circus with paparazzi and souvenir hounds chasing us and grabbing at us every second, begging for interviews. I don’t want to even think about what the groupies will be willing to exchange for one of our running shirts.

We’ll have to get body guards and wear disguises and become prisoners in our hotel rooms. Then Leno and Letterman will be calling constantly. Those guys never give up.

And once the tabloids get a hold of it, they’ll be digging up all kinds of lies and will probably find out about Mark’s wife secret alien love child from Elvis. Then we’ll be destroyed for every little fashion faux pas at the Golden Globe Awards, and you’ll see our pictures at fuggingitup.blogspot.com. They’ll just destroy me if I’m wearing those lycra tights.

And the money. You know money changes people. Once we’re all rich, are we really going to want run anymore? Are we going to get all snobby about shoes and stuff and be constantly squabbling over who has sponsored the bigger race? Will we be all bitter about registering for the Running Chick Chicago Marathon? I can see all the fame and fortune just tearing people apart.

I think we need to think this through before it gets the better of us.

Thanks for the warning Jon, but it came a little too late. This weekend in Tampa, the Pink Lady was houded by media, well actually interviewed and photographed by by tv and newspapers, as was Karen (all downhill). I had groupies following me and waving at. It was awesome. I have sooooo much to blog about when I finally get home. I even have cards from people I have to send our site too…wooohooo. Next time I will take cards with me…lol.

I haven’t been able to get back into the board recently - it won’t log me on. I tried the ‘generate a new password’ link and that didn’t work either. Woe…
