slow recovery & hints of the future?

passion for running category: running on Tuesday, December 14 2004

Well, I sure did not get hit as hard by the puke-fest as my dear wife but it seems like my recovering from this flu is taking longer. I’ve been nauseous just walking around this week!

Tomorrow I’m going to give running a try and just see.

On another subject, I talked to one of my gym’s spin class leaders. His class is Thursdays at noon so I’m thinking next Thursday is as good a time as any to give it a try.

As an aside, Jerry (the spin class leader) is a three-time Ironman. When I chatted him up last week, he mentioned his VO2 max has improved by 5ml/kg/minute in the last three years and he attributes the improvement to spin classes and bike work in general. His VO2 max was 59 three years ago. It’s now 64 – a really tremendous level of fitness by almost any standard.

I’m game!

How do you determine your VO2 max? Is that a laboratory type thing?

Yup. Ever see athletes running on a treadmill with a hose attached to their nose and mouth? If I have it right, that is a VO2 max test!

OOOOH! Spinning! Mark, I am new to it, but totally hooked. I love it! Hope you feel better soon and that you have a great spin class tomorrow.

Are there good places to get Torrone in Edmunton? Can you get the chocolate/espresso covered kind there? If not, email me with your address and I’ll try to get some to mail to you. I’m going to the North End on Saturday!

Welcome back to the living. Today will be my third time at spinning- it might be addictive.

Hope you can run without puking! Take care of yourself and don’t overdo it. What is your next event?

Enjoy the spin class! Remember, once you’re used to it, the idea is to go as hard as you can without vomiting…
