running after the flu

passion for running category: run log, running on Monday, December 6 2004

I had a bad stomach cramp flu this past weekend. It was mostly gone by mid-afternoon on Sunday but, of course things are a bit off after a bug like that…

Anyway, I had planned on a light lunch run today since finter is no more in Alberta having been convincingly replaced by roughly six inches of snow and -20 celcius/-4 Fahrenheit temperatures. However, sister Corinne emailed with a challenge to run the four sisters route. For the second time in a row, I hummed and hawed and finally said, “I’ll give it a go”.

It didn’t “go”. Well, I guess it kinda go’d. Running in the snow can be tough especially uphill and I was feeling pretty out of sorts I imagine from being sick. We got Walterdale hill out of the way and proceeded on with me panting like a St. Bernard. Hmmm…funny! I think I was probably running a lot like a St. Bernard runs too!

Before the second hill (Victoria), I announced to Corinne that I felt like garbage and would only do three hills with her. I expected her to take off on me after the third hill but she stuck with me through the short-cut and we ran home together. It was nice to have the company!

Back to talking about winter. It was +10 last week and now it is -20. Running in the cold is no big deal but these sudden changes in temperature really kick your ass and believe me – my ass has been kicked. My ass is COLD!

One more thing – the ankle still rocks. I think I’m ready to run back-to-back days again!

You KNOW I sympathize about the cold Mark…I have to say the advice about cold weather gear has helped me, but I have a hard time imagining what I would do in your temps!

See? All that freezing cold running and you won’t need ice packs for your ankle. :)

-20, that’s really hard. I’d like to have some snow, too but if it’s that cold, brrrrrrrr

Wow. That’s a lot of snow! We just had a dusting last night and I’m already dying to try out my new running snowshoes. Have you ever thought about getting a pair of those?
