fighting SPAM

I haven’t been blogging much lately because I’ve been teaching myself PHP and MySQL and figuring out a way to eliminate the SPAM all the Complete Running blogs have been inundated with.

Well, I am not too good with PHP or MySQL yet, but it looks like I’ve got the SPAM thing figured out and am going to make some coding changes to all the CR blogs later today/tonight.

So, if you experience problems viewing or leaving comments on a CR blog, come back in five minutes. All will be well!

Before my hosting service crapped out and I had to move (and thus switched blogging service, so big changes at my blog), I used this for a little while. I went from 100+ comment spam posts on some days to zero instantly.

I’ve taken 3 steps to decrease spam on my site:
1) Installed WordPress Blacklist Comment Spam Plugin
2) Then installed the Comment Moderation Plugin
3) Set in my options to hold any comment that contains more then 2 links. (A common characteristic of comment spam is a large number of hyperlinks.)

These 3 steps should help tremendously!

I was fighting the same issues. I upgrade WordPress, installed the Easy Mass Delete and Blacklist plugins, added some blacklist words, and renamed wp-comments.php. It worked well. I hope your changes work.

spam code – how did you get that to work? I’ve been trying to do that with my site – the spam is just getting completely outta hand!
