true mental toughness

passion for running category: running on Tuesday, October 19 2004

I happened upon this link some time ago and it really inspired me.

It talks about a persons mental toughness quotient. What surprised me was the different angle this fellow takes. Pay special attention to the third paragraph where he lays out his “coachly definition of mental toughness”.

Maybe not what you’d expected huh? I think we can all learn from what this guy is saying.

What do you think?

I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of that workout at the end! And yeah, he has some depressingly good points.

Wow, now there is a coach with an angle…I guess I’m not sure where I fit anymore but he sure makes some good but tough points.

It’s something to reach for, that MTQ, like a golden ring. I’ll just add that to my list of goals!

I have spent several months reading up on mental toughness. I believe it’s definitely where my biggest gains will come with regards to my running. I’m strong, but I’m still a wuss mentally. I’m working on it. I’ve read MIND GYM by Gary Mack, and that had some good stuff. I also read THE NEW MENTAL TOUGHNESS TRAINING FOR SPORTS, by Jim Loehr. Each had some good ideas that I’ve swiped. I think it’s definitely important. The site you mentioned sees to fit the same vein.

Thanks Chris. It’s been a topic of passion for me for quite some time simply because it is such a big part of running – particular with running distance events. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, mental toughness/conditioning/development or what have you are as/more exciting to me as the physical fitness one gains from running!

After getting past all the sarcasm and drill instructor BS he does make some practical points.

The author has some very good points and balances the conundrum of training hard enough to really give it one’s BEST with the realization that recovery is very important. This one goes in my keeper file, and I think I need to try that last workout sometime very soon, say, two weeks before the Jingle Bell 10k.

BTW nice Blog. Sounds like your marathon, recovery, and goal-setting are right on track.
