Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

my marathon checklist

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, October 6 2004

Mike suggested we share our marathon checklists prior to race day ( good idea Mike! ) so here’s mine:

Shorts (for the sake of decency)
Tights (hate ‘em but just in case)
Short-sleeve shirt
Long-sleeve shirt
Shoes (pretty important)
Socks (might be good)
Hat (squinting = tenseness = wasted energy)
Gretchen (race mgt)
Pace band (race mgt part II)
Scotch tape for pace bands
Ibuprofen (pain mgt)
Tylenol (pain mgt part II)
A baggie for the drugs
Bodyglide: Goes on nipples, inner thighs and in between toes.
6 cliff-shot gels (to be mixed 50/50 with water)
Gel flasks (2)
Water belt
Water bottle
Gatorade
Pen (for writing “power” words on hands)
Race bib #
Pins for race bib
Racing chip

Here’s an excel file you can download in case you want to use my list as a template.

I would also add, an extra set of shoes laces, been to enough races where people have pulled hard on their laces and……snap!!! (Not only the lace, but their minds!!). I have never used them but I pack them for other people. Also, I find that a band-aid around the pace band works better than tape as I find the tape scratches your skin and the band-aid is softer and seems to stick better, as sometimes water gets on the tape and before you know it, you loose your pace band. I also keep a pace band in my water belt just in case I need it and I have attached a safety pin to it and then I safety pin it to my bib, as while running, I don’t have time to “fart” around with band-aids!! (Gotta think of it all).
