A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

a bit of relief + gretchen forgets her gels

I ran 6k at marathon pace during my lunch break today. It sucked. Yup, a hard and laboured run. Oh well, it will be better tomorrow, Wednesday and on the 10th – so says the power of positive thinking!

Another subject: Gretchen bailed on me today. Her batteries ran outta juice. She’s my coach and should know better than to go out improperly fueled right? Oh well, I’m not going to give her too much greif since at least she didn’t choose to do this on marathon day. That would have royally sucked.

I wondered how long the footpod battery would last. I think I read it was supposed to be good for “up to 40 hours”. Turns out the “up to” part is a little generous. Maybe just a crappy factory battery but it only lasted for 15 hours of running. I replaced it with a AAA Energizer (she only takes one). Hopefully, it will last longer than the first one.

I removed the pod part from the shoe clip very carefully so as not to move the clip. If the clip gets moved substantially, I would have to recalibrate the monitor and that would royally suck too. Before I leave for Victoria, I’ll go to the track and check it just to make sure. I sure don’t want Gretchen giving me false readings on race day!

Gretchen was just planning ahead. Unless you’re running a 10 hour marathon (no that’s not a jinx, don’t be superstitious!) she’s good to go.

15 hours is quite the lame! My Fitsense goes something like 60 hours before it needs new batteries (CR2302). Of course it doesn’t have all the cool features that yours has, but I’m big into the low maintenance factor. At least it didn’t happen during the marathon. Hey I got an idea: Let’s all make a checklist so we don’t forget anything on marathon day like our gels, batteries, pace bands, etc. Then we can check each other’s blogs and see if we forgot something on our checklists.

Its your own damn fault, Mark. If you weren’t running so fast, she wouldn’t be using up her battery so early. You’re working the poor girl to death! :)

I thought it was the other way around?
