what to do what to do

Thanks everyone for your words of support. It’s most appreciated. :)

So, the plan is to call my doctor tomorrow (Monday) and make an appointment. I’m hoping I can get in right away but it’ll depend on how busy he is I guess.

I’ll be in the gym tomorrow and the next day and the next day until I figure out what the heck is going on with my foot and am ok to run again.

Hopefully that won’t be too long. This not running stuff SUCKS!

Oh! Thanks also for the compliments on my new blog design. I’m pretty happy about it especially since I did this one entirely on my own from the ground up. I actually feel like I’m beginning to understand and LIKE this cascading style sheet (CSS) stuff.

Learning sure is great ain’t it?

muhuhahaha!

She’s moved her blog here!

Yay Pam. Welcome!

the drama is not over

Well, yesterday I thought things were ok with my foot. Today I don’t. My arch and ankle hurt more today than they did before my run yesterday so I am for sure going to go see my doctor.

I hope it’s not major.

attention bloglines users!

passion for running category: running on Thursday, October 28 2004

I was curious why my bloglines subscription to Jon’s blog shows the link to his comments, whereas the subscription to my own did not.

Turns out when you subscribe to some blogs, you have two choices. For example, in the case of my blog the choices are:

http://www.completerunning.com/running-blog-mark/wp-rss2.php and http://www.completerunning.com/running-blog-mark/wp-atom.php

Most of my bloglines readers (you know who you are) are subscribed to the second feed – the one that ends in wp-atom.php If you want to see a link to my comments, you should subscribe to the FIRST one that ends in wp-rss2.php

Bloglines makes this easy. Put my blogs main address http://www.completerunning.com/running-blog-mark/ in the search box and select the Subscribe to URL option from the drop down list and press enter. Once you’ve done this, you will see the feed you need to subscribe to. Subscribe!

I imagine this kinda thing applies to other blogs and maybe even to news feed application/programs but I’m not sure.

Whatever you choose, it’s nice to have you aboard!

great news + canine illumination

passion for running category: running on Thursday, October 28 2004

I RAN today! Wahoo! Yippee!

Man, it’s been hard to not run. I think I have a BIT of an idea now what Aaron’s been going through. It is very depressing not to run at all.

First, before I tell you about my run and the “canine illumination”, here’s an update on the ol’ foot thing I’ve been dealing with. In the beginning, I thought it was an arch problem. In the second week I realized the pain/discomfort was located just below the inside ankle bone just above the arch and that the pain was actually radiating down into the arch and around the ankle. I did some icing and stretching this past week or so and it’s been getting better and better. However, this past few days it hasn’t seemed to improve much. The battle this past while certainly has been within: To run too early was to risk making the injury worse. To not run was to send me careening toward insanity.

My latest goal was to start running yesterday but a lunch meeting interfered and, quite frankly, I don’t think I would have gone anyway – the ankle just didn’t feel right.

There’s no doubt I’ve been depressed and this morning was really bad. Not running into my third week really got to me this morning. Even though my ankle didn’t feel any better than yesterday, I resolved to TRY running. The deal I made with myself was if it hurt badly after 10 minutes, I’d walk back to the gym and for sure go see a doctor.

I got out there at lunch time starting out very gingerly. The first five minutes felt awkward – especially in that ankle but at least there wasn’t any pain. For sure there was discomfort but no pain. After ten minutes of running, I had a very small amount of pain. Very small so I kept going.

To make a long story short I ran for 30 minutes! The ankle doesn’t feel quite right but I’m sitting at my desk feeling no worse than before the run. In fact, it feels a bit better probably due to the increased blood flow.

So, now for my bit of canine illumination…

Last night I did some reading on ankle injuries. It wasn’t long before I became convinced what I have is some form of sprain. I see evidence of this when I experience pain pointing my toes inward or rolling outward on my ankle.

This kind of injury is not common among runners. It is more common among people who play sports involving a lot of lateral movement (e.g. basketball players, volleyball players and maybe people who run/hike on rough terrain).

So, during my run today, I started wondering how I got a sprained ankle during the marathon? After all, it’s all straight ahead running right?

WRONG! Well, it wasn’t for ME anyway. Do you remember in my race report where I mentioned that lady and her dog crossing in front of me and the fact that I tripped over the dog and almost fell down? Eureka! Yes, you got it. When I tripped over the dog I also rolled over my ankle. THAT’S where my injury happened.

So there you have it – canine illumination.

I think I’m back. All I have to do is take it a bit easy and do my best not to roll over on that ankle.

Yabba-dabba-doo!

Please check the directory to make sure you are still on there!

more bloggers!

Well, the RBF directory has broken 100! We are at 107 and growing. I’ve added a whack of running blogs including a bunch from Elite Running that I had neglected until now. Rather than list everyone here, I’ve placed the phrase, “Just Added” in the far right column of the directory.

Welcome bloggers! Sounds like it’s time to celebrate!

I gotta question for ya!

a great champion

passion for running category: inspiration, running on Tuesday, October 26 2004

Well, I don’t have a lot to say about my running lately since I’m not running so I thought I’d share a little something I read today on Sri Chimnoy’s website. You fans of Chi Running may relate to his site quite nicely. When I read this, it reminded me of Chris’ Are You A Serious Runner post.

A Great Champion

A great champion is he who wins all the races.

A great champion is he who participates in all the races.

A great champion is he who does not care for the results of the races – whether he is first or last or in between. He races just to get joy and give joy to the observers.

A great champion is he who transcends his own previous records.

A great champion is he who maintains his standard.

A great champion is he who remains happy even when he cannot maintain his standard.

A great champion is he who has established his inseparable oneness with the winner and the loser alike.

A great champion is he who, owing to the advancement of years, retires from racing or terminates his career happily and cheerfully.

A great champion is he who longs to see the fulfilment of his dreams – if not through himself, then in and through others. It does not even have to be in and through his own dear ones; it can be in and through any human being on earth. If someone who could not manifest his own dreams is extremely happy when he sees his vision being manifested into reality through somebody else, then he is a really great champion.

So…are ya?
