A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

taking a deep breath…

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, September 22 2004

I’ve set my race strategy for October 10th:

- go out a bit slow
- increase speed at 5k
- increase speed again at 16k
- make allowances for fade from 33k ONWARD
- pace myself to a 3 hour 30 minute marathon

A 3:30 finish is a lofty goal and one which I admit having some nervousness around. However, I’ve decided it’s better to try, and come up short, than to run slower and wonder if I could have finished in 3:30. In other words…

I’M GOING FOR IT!!!!!!!!!

I made a customized pace-band in Excel so you can see the whole pacing strategy. Feel free to view and download the paceband here. The band is pretty slick if I do say so myself. To customize it for yourself, all you have to do is enter your pace in minutes and seconds and the band will generate the km splits (let me know if you’d like a version of the paceband based on miles).

Mike: Thanks and you will. You will!

Richard: Thanks again for your encouragement and support. You are a big reason why I’m going to succeed. Of course, if I crash and burn, it’ll be all YOUR fault. ;)
