I biked to work this morning and, for the first time, brought my heart rate monitor along.

Wow. I know my cardio system doesn’t work very hard on the bike in comparison to running – even when I push pretty hard. But this morning I was shocked at how big a difference there is between the two activities.

With running it takes me next to no time to get my heart rate up to 160 bmp (80% of my max). This morning on the bike my average heart rate was 127 (63%) and my max was 158 (79%).

That’s amazing to me because I rarely coast and always try to keep my cadence high. Plus, my legs are always fatigued by the time I get to work.

In other words, it’s hard work!

…trying to think of a clever ending to this post and can’t so I’ll just say good night.

Heck yeah! I had the same experience only from the other direction. I had been going to the gym 5-6 days a week with 50 minutes of cardio on bike and stepper. HR was about 150 for my workout and I was comfortable. Then I started running and I was shocked at how fast my HR shot up! Let’s you know quickly which activity needs more muscles.

I was just looking at Jon’s comment, and I think if you biked up stairs, you’d get closer to the feeling your heart gets on a run.

This would be me: “HELP! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!!!” but thanks for the suggestion anyway. :)

Your legs are probably tired from the resistance you get from the gearing of the bike. It might be a bit of weight training, almost.

That’s definitely an interesting observation Mark. I’ve always known it was harder to run then ride (I rode my bikes for years before getting a car), but now I’m glad you have the numbers to back it up. I imagine the fact that you use basically all of your muscles while running as opposed to maybe a little over half while riding have something to do with it.
