A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

my wife the runner

passion for running category: running on Tuesday, August 10 2004

My wife runs more miles than I do. Oddly, she does this without ever putting on a pair of running shoes.

You see, Lori stays at home with our kids while I go and work with adults (although it is debateable whether I truly do work with adults).

On TOP of that, Lori cares for other people’s children as well. Right now, she has two rug-rats in addition to our own. Usually she has three or four.

Lori RUNS after these kids ALL day. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate and admire her for that. On some nights, she goes out to the gym or to do some shopping. Whatever the reason, it’s so she can enjoy some well-deserved ALONE time. When she goes, I get to look after the kids – just our TWO kids for only a couple of hours and it tuckers me out.

How in the hell would I EVER handle being with four, five or six kids for 8 to 10 hours?!?!

Some days Lori gets tired and frustrated. Some days she feels at the end of her rope. Some days she wonders if it’s all worth it. Today might be one of those days.

I’m writing this highly non-running post to let my wife know I appreciate and love what she is doing for our kids and for other children. Her running AMOUNTS to something – especially for our kids.

Leave a comment for Lori and tell her how right I am.

I know she’ll appreciate it.

Lori, what you are doing is THE most important thing you can do. I did it, too, even watching other people’s kids in my house. It IS at times exhausting and confining, but all these years later, I am SO glad to have had those wonderful years with my kids. I wouldn’t have traded that time for anything. It is SO worth it.

Lori, you’re doing a good job! Those children are our future and I think they are in good hands. By the way, Mark, I like how the site design has gone all Martian. Very high tech looking.

Mark and Lori:

1. I love the new look!

2. Lori, I admire your courage and determination in staying home with your kids. What a great gift you two are giving them!

I don’t know how it is in Canada, but in the US, I always hear women saying, “I’d like to stay home, but we just can’t afford it.” Bull hockey. You just have to choose to do it, then devote yourself to a lifestyle that allows it.

You are working toward this admirable goal and your family will be stronger for it.

3. Lori, you ROCK!! :) Remeber: the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.

Lori- Good for you! As a stay at home mother myself I know what an important job you have. You are very fortunate to have a husband that understands that importance and recognizes it to others. Too often women feel like they “just stay home” We should be proud we stay home and proud of the children we are raising!

My wife stays home as well. It’s definitely not the line of work she intended for herself. She does it mostly because it’s what works best for our family. She’s not a natural-born mother, but she works hard at it every day. And I think she’s a GREAT mother. So, I think you do the best work in the universe. I am forever grateful to people, men or women, who bring up the new generation.

Thanks, Lori!

whoa nice new digs!

And Lori? I COMPLETELY hear you and I am only home with two children at the moment. Some days I think…day care’s not that bad..I should go back to work…But you totally know it’s worth it, when YOU are there for the first steps and first words (I wanna go to the beach).
My hat is off to you!
