another kind of motivation

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, July 21 2004

I never HAD this motivation but, since I have a wife and several female friends, I think I can understand it.

Today, Corinne and I did our four hill route. At the beginning of the run, we looked skyward and saw clouds forming.

We had surprise guests today. Friend Jean and her brother Dean decided to give the route a go. Jean is a very strong runner and had no problem keeping up but her brother is just getting back into it. He did VERY well considering where he is in his training but it still slowed us down somewhat. We came in at about 52:30 on a route we would have liked to do in 50 minutes. However we compensated by running the hills strong and then waiting.

So, back to the “motivation” angle. When Corinne and I said goodbye, she looked at the sky and said something like, “that was slower than I would have liked but at least we beat the rain – I did NOT want to have to re-do my hair”.

Folks, I’m follicular challenged so using “having to re-do my hair” as running motivation is foreign to me. Hmmm. Do I win or lose on that one? I know it’s always nice to have different sources of inspiration but…

Anyway, it started raining (pouring) moments after Corinne and I went into our buildings so I guess everything worked out.

On an entirely different note, I’m pretty sore and tired after yesterday’s gym workout.

Those hi-rep/low weight sets are a perfect formula for soreness. May I again recommend doing low rep sets (5 or less) and and high weights (85% or more of your max).

That kinda goes against prevailing thinking on weight training for RUNNERS but I’m always open to new ideas. Do you have information that supports your approach?

Thanks! :)

It is funny what motivates some runners. :) (Side note to Corinne-I went to the store today and bought a new hair product by DEP, it’s designed as an “endurace sport pomade”, which promises to keep your hair under control in “all conditions”. I hope it works! ~ If I know I’m going to look bad after running a race, at least my hair will still be cute! haha)

“follicular challenged”, I had not heard that one but it’s cute.
