A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

working out is HARD!

passion for running category: in the gym, running on Saturday, July 17 2004

I’m on track with my gym schedule. “In the Gym” #2 is in the books but this working out stuff is really hard. I mean, it really takes it outta me! After yesterday’s workout I felt completely exhausted. I guess it will take time to get used to just like running did just like biking did!

10 minute warm-up treadmill run
3 sets x 12 reps bench press
3 sets x 12 reps dumbell bicep curls
3 sets x 10 reps back extensions
2 sets x 12 reps dumbell tricep extensions
3 sets x 12 reps shoulder press
3 sets x 12 reps shoulder shrugs
2 sets x 12 reps bent over rows
3 sets x 10 reps abdominal crunches (one more set today!)
3 sets x 12 reps lat pull-downs
3 sets x 12 reps seated cable rows
2 sets x 10 reverse grip curls (new today to work the forearms)
2 sets x 10 on the “pec deck” (new today)

P.S. I could eat more than a horse lately! I think I have that in common with Dianna. (Was that you Dianna?)

Yes, I tend to consume quite a lot of food in my effort to not have a “crash” while running. I’ve been made fun of more than once in social situations, as I go back to fill my plate for the third time. (In my defense, I eat healthy foods-not crap! Mostly.)

As a matter of fact, just yesterday my husband was kind enough to point out to me that if I ever stop running (gasp!) I will most likely triple in size almost instantly from all the food I eat. Isn’t he the sweetest?

Dianna, I daresay our husbands may be cut from the same cloth?! LOL ;-)

Mark, do you do a lower body day as well? My new program combined upper and lower together and the ‘rest’ day (I use this termlightly) is abs day. All being a run or x-train cardio of course. Anyway, at the end of weight trg day I’m thoroughly and totally exahaused and famished. I feel like a walking fruit/veggie stand! ;-)

Well, you too if it’s any consolation, I’m sure I’d rapidly pack on 30+ pounds pretty quick too!

Reba, I’m not doing leg weights YET. I just passed my one month bike commuting anniversary a week ago and am biking 20 miles three times a week with that + I haven’t backed off at all on the running mileage. It was a very tough first few weeks (I was constantly tired, sore and aching) but I’m finally strong on the bike and am having quality runs too. My thinking was to start with upper body and CORE (my REAL weakness) and, once I’m stronger in those areas, do some leg weights with the rationale that they are under a lot of workload already. However, I may start them earlier afer some recent reading. I just want to take things one step at a time!!

Well, I don’t have a husband to remind me about my eating, but I nag myself. And I have noticed a real increase in consumption lately, too!! Like Dianna, it’s mostly good stuff, though. I’m wondering about missing my weight training for so long. I’ll bet when I get back, I’ll have some catching up to do!
