hot (?) run

passion for running category: run log, running on Thursday, July 15 2004

We managed 9+ km in 42 minutes today so about a 7:30 minute mile pace. Slower than last week’s 7 minute-mile pace over 7 km but a very good workout considering it was 25C/77F in the shade today (and not much of the run was in the shade!). It was exactly what Corinne and I wanted – a bit scaled back in the speed department for such a hot day.

I’m curious. Do you folks in the US – especially in southern US consider 77 degrees AT ALL hot? It’s a damn hot temperature to run in for me. I suppose it’s what a person is accustomed to – something I’m gonna have to do since it’s going to go to 90 degrees over the next couple of days.

Now I have a rollerblade with Aaron to look forward to after work. That’ll be great fun!

I’ll take 77 any day of the week! Above 85, I get a little worried.

I think those Southerners think we are wimps with the temperatures we complain about!

BUT I bet they couldn’t (wouldn’t WANT to) hack one of our winter runs.
My fav by far!

Ya, I think perhaps we humans get used to a range of temperatures and it gets harder when we get out of the range. So, maybe for folks in the south, the bottom and top end of their range is higher than ours. I often hear of Albertan’s who move to Vancouver or Victoria and one year later they can’t hack the cold and complain whenever the temperature goes below 20C/70F. My brother is one of those people!

That’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it! ;)

I never, ever ran outside when i was in Tucson…WAY TOO HOT. But 77 degrees sounds fine to me! Depends on the humidity and how blazing the sun is. Once it gets over 80, I get cranky and I run either in the a.m. or after the sun has started to dip down.

Try running the Honolulu Marathon!!! Now, that is one hot and humid run! I enjoyed it so much, I’m goin try Maui!!!

Mark, sorry we didn’t hook up last night, but saw Aaron at the Running Room 20th Anniversary Celebration! We had way too much fun! It was very cool seeing a sea of red caps running the entire length of the High Level Bridge! I hope someone got a picture of it ’cause it was a sight!!

HA! I was one of those people Mark.
I lived in Yellowknife for 2 years and when we came back to Southern Ontario I nearly shiveled up and died in the heat of the summer (granted it was a particularily hot and humid summer).

I used to live in North Carolina and they counted the days over 90 every summer. It would be in the 80′s when I got up in the morning and I’d be sweating by the time I got to the car. I come up here to MI and in a few years, I’m whining when the thermometer says anything over 80F. I can live with 77 though. As long as its not humid.

Before I left Virginia, I would run in the morning when it was 70-75 to avoid the 90 degree weather in the late afternoon. When I go back next month, I’ll need to get used to it all over again. I love these 60 degree mornings in RI.

I am in CA and 77 degrees F is good running weather for me. anything above 80, I start to take things slow. but on the opposite of heat i think 60 is freezing. Like most have said depends what you are use to.

I’d love a 77 degree running day right about now! It’s been in the mid 90s here in Austin lately, and it will get warmer before it gets cooler again. But as they say, training in this heat makes it oh so much easier to go fast once it starts to cool down again.

I think you already know my feelings on this. My IDEAL running weather is 60? and drizzly.

Seattle has been struck with a few very warm summers (for us) and it sucks to run in.

Good thing I can’t run any more.

HAR!!!

Over the 4th it was right at 100 degrees all weekend here in North Carolina. Of course, you have to add in the intense humidity and I think they determined our heat index to be around 110. So, yeah, I’d take 77 anyday over what we get between July and August in the south.

77f is nice and cool for me. Above 85 is just way to warm for running. Of course in Colorado the weather is so unpredictable we have to just live with 45f one day and 95 two days later.
