Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

training & work-out schedule

passion for running category: in the gym, running on Monday, July 12 2004

Just following up on a couple of promises/goals:

1) To outline a training plan for the Royal Victoria Marathon, and
2) To incorporate weight lifting into my training regimen.

The schedule isn’t 100% finished. I still need to work a bit on my Saturday schedule. Aaron, Tom and I have had success with alternating Saturday’s between speedwork and long slow distance running so I’m going to stick with that but the Saturday’s schedule still needs work.

I also need to add the number of miles/kms to some of the runs, schedule in a rest week and do some thinking on the taper.

Let me know what you think.

“In the Gym” starts TOMORROW!

You are SO dedicated.
I WISH I could haul my ass downstairs to use our little universal gym type thingy.
Lately I turn into a couch potato between runs! HELP!

I’m with you Pam…I used to love weights but now I love running and I always find an excuse to NOT lift weights…sigh…maybe we should look to Mark as our inspiration?!

That looks like a great training schedule, with lots of diversity. Do you ever worry about not taking more time off? I usually take off the day before and the day after my long runs but I will have to start varying that as I start doing 2 and then 3 long walks per week. Just curious about your thoughts on rest days.

Good luck in your training. You’ve obviously put a lot of time and thought into this.

Okalee dokalee:

Pam: Thanks for the compliment but I’m not there yet. One of the reasons I posted my goal is so that YOU folk would keep me honest. If you are serious about wanting to work out, post your goal and I will harass you when you don’t live up to expectations! ;)

Dianna: I too used to enjoy doing weights so I’m hoping if I can get the habit established, I will be able to rekindle that passion.

Marshall: Good questions! I always take the day off the long run off because I’m afraid my wife would kill me if I didn’t (that’s a joke Lori!!). I subscribe to the “easy/hard” method of training. A hard day should be followed by an easy day or a pure rest day. My friday runs are short and SLOW to allow me to be rested for Saturday’s hard run. Likewise with my Tuesday run. The only two hard days I have in a row are wednesday and thursday but even they differ in that one is a quality run with hills whereas the next is pure speed. Hope this helps! I notice you seem to employ much of the same strategy with race walking. Is that right?

Cheers to you all!!
