passion for running category: in the gym, running on Friday, July 9 2004

When I began biking, I told the world my next goal would be to start a weight lifting program once commuting was a habit.

If I’m to pay attention to this morning’s post it looks like I’ve arrived so here I am nervously committing to start next week. I must admit being more anxious about this than I was about starting biking.

I really really need to develop better core and upper body strength.

This will be my greatest challenge so I’m gonna ask you people to hold me accountable to this goal. My plan is to work out in the gym two days per week (I’ve gotta figure out WHICH days this weekend) and I’ve created a new category called “in the gym” to file my posts under.

I’m counting on you to keep me honest.

Good luck! I’ll be watching you! (But in a very non-threatening, anti-stalker kind of way)

Where are you going to work out? The reason why I ask, will depend on accessibility for the days?

Wow, Mark, you are taking it very seriously, respect! I am jealous about that. I am watching you and try to set similar goals for myself ;-)

Mark,

That’s cool you’re into working out. I too realize that working out is the way for me to get stronger so I can get faster. That’s why I’m recommending you go out and read Pavel Tsatsouline’s great book “Power to the People” (search for it on Amazon or go to http://www.dragondoor.com). We’re talking two exercises here (deadlifts/bench or side arm press) that will work your entire body. Since Hal Higdon recommends coming off weights during marathon training, I’m not currently doing the deadlifts, but I still do the side arm press for my arms. Last year when I was bench pressing I went from a 127 pound max to 164 pound max in like two months. I was up to 225 pounds on deadlifts until I sprained my foot on an obstacle course. His system really works, it only takes 20 minutes a day. It’s easy to stick to.

Way to go Marco! You can do it! Working your upper body will help with your back and make you feel even stronger.
