A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather – a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who's beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

a good day

passion for running category: running on Wednesday, June 23 2004

Went out and ran my four-hill route today at lunch. The first 10 or 15 minutes felt pretty brutal because my legs were very achy from all the biking. I took it slow and it payed off big time – my legs loosened up and felt really good by the half way point.

I’ve been reading that book you see on the left column of my blog. Last night, I was reading a chapter on correcting form problems. I know I sometimes lean toward being a heal-striker so today, I concentrated hard on landing correctly. I found that a slight forward lean really helped me land better and it made running feel much easier. I’m not sure if it was just a mental trick but I’m going to continue working on that.

More good news – I trucked up the last hill (Bellamy) no problem today. I’m definitely getting stronger. There was a time not long ago when Bellamy had my number and oftened triggered the old “you’ve-been-running-at-95%-for-too-long” gag reflex I’ve experienced occasionally.

Total distance was about 10k – I’m happy about today.

is that what is?

Everytime I do a race, I almost vomit coming across the finish line. I call it finish line anxiety. Not sure what’s all about.

You should come run here sometime, there is NO route that doesn’t have at least 4 hills in it. Some of them are BRUTAL!
But at races we pass a lot of non hilly runners on the hills. :)

Ha! Funny Pam. The gag reflex that I have is interesting to me. I’ve learned that if I push my max heart rate over 95% for over a couple of minutes, the reflex comes. I guess it is the body’s way of saying slow the #$&K down! I think I’m lucky to have this “warning light” because I’ve heard other people just pass out!

Perhaps you and I have the same luck(?????)!

Of course if you read about or talk to some racers (notice I didn’t say “runners”) they will tell you if you are not puking at the finish line, you didn’t run fast enough!!
