To quote Bart Simpson, “I never knew something could suck AND blow so badly at the same time” (today’s run wasn’t quite that bad but I love that quote and certainly have used it after a run or two)!

This morning I really had to drag my butt outta bed. My legs were heavy heavy heavy! Although I didn’t feel much fatigue after yesterday’s three runs, I sure felt it this morning.

Corinne and I set out to do our long four hill route at lunch today – we pushed the pace pretty hard. Things were very laboured for me by the third hill and I could feel some fatigue in my back. I know from experience that’s where I need to be smart and back off so I told Corinne I’d be ducking off at the half-way point of the fourth hill. No point in risking my back going out because for me that can mean weeks of painful recovery.

Looks like I made the right decision because my back is feeling good but I am soooo very tired.

I can see why Oli said he does two runs a day for the 8 weeks prior to a marathon because it certainly adds a whole other level of endurance to one’s day. I’ve never trained that way for a marathon so I will have to experiment with those days every once in a while and see if it helps my running!

a favorite character of mine!

I’ve been doubling up my training ever since I started. It’s probably because of a stupid article I read in Men’s Health about Tom Jane, the actor who did the comic book movie, “The Punisher.” He did twice daily workouts with a trainer to get into shape for the movie. I thought, “Hmmm. I never knew you could recover enough in one day to do your work twice.” Turns out that you can.

What I do as security: have a whey protein drink after both workouts to throw more protein into regenerating muscle tissue, listen to my body and skip the second workout if something is complaining.

Whether I’m doing the right thing or not is debatable.

Very rational approach Chris. There are studies that show the most important thing you can do around nutrition is to take in protein as soon as possible after a work out.

Your other comment about listening to your body is important too – we need to do everything we can to avoid injury!
