painful realization

argh…I just realized I am exactly two weeks and a day away from my next race – Edmonton’s Corporate Challenge and I’m extremely under-confident in bettering my time from last year (that’s been my goal for this race).

Last year I ran the 5.4 minute course in just under 40 minutes so, in 7:20 minutes per mile – a pace that literally feels a hundred miles of training away right now! I feel compelled to get out there and do some serious speed work but I’m also experienced enough to know I need at least a few days of low-key activity to rest up from this past Sunday’s half-marathon.

Me thinks I’m SOL in terms of bettering my time but the other side of me says I can suck it up for less than 40 minutes and just deal with the pain! I just checked this race prediction calculator - it says based on my performance in the half this past weekend, I would run 5.4 miles in 42 minutes so I have two weeks to improve the situation.

hmmm…
