a favourite moment in time
This photo of good friend Barry is one of my all time favourite running memories. Barry, Aaron and I have known one another for about four years. It took several marathons and about five years of training for Barry to qualify for the Boston Marathon. On that day, we ran about 25km with Barry before he pulled away (Aaron and I had a very bad day!) and “went for it”. My wife Lori was there to capture this perfect moment in time. Barry was seconds under his qualifying time and the people cheering in the background are very close to him. Just look at the pumping arms and the expression on his face – priceless.
I love this picture and am inspired every time I look at it. Why? Half the reason is that it is a close friend winning his final battle in a hard fought war to get to Boston and I am so proud and pleased for him. The other half of the equation is that picture will be ME in 15 years because it’s more than probable that’s how long it will take me to get to Boston and MAN is that day ever going to be sweet. “Gifted” runners (you know the ones – perfect form, perfect body composition etc etc) can never appreciate how difficult it is for us mere mortals to qualify for the ultimate marathon!
Cigars will be smoked and Martini’s drank the day THIS runner qualifies and my “Barry moment” is captured on film.
I hope you’ll be there with me!
