A Passion for Running

Welcome to the home of Mark aka The Running Blogfather - a 40 year-old dad, husband and marathon runner who’s beaten injury and is on the comeback trail!

about me

passion for running category: running, running room on Tuesday, April 20 2004

I grew up on a farm southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada but am 100% city slicker now. My wife Lori and I are proud parents of an eight year old girl princess and almost five year old boy monkey.

I currently work as a business/policy analyst with the Government of Alberta. It’s a job where I enjoy doing a a whack of research, writing and project management. Previously, I enjoyed a career as a freelance wedding/portrait photographer. I’m still passionate about photography - especially when taking pictures of family, friends and runners! I’m also very interested in most other things related to graphic imagery and design. My other big interest is in researching my family history/genealogy.

Like my Complete Running partner Aaron, I began running around 1992. Thinking back, the reason was mostly financial since it was the only activity I could afford after graduating from the U of A and finding myself unemployed! Back then, a “long” run was anything beyond 15 minutes.

Around 1998 (for some reason I can’t remember) I stopped running and quickly found myself thirty pounds overweight and suffering from terrible back problems. About a year after that, the back pain subsided just long enough for me to begin running again and I’ve never looked “back” (groan). That year, I also suffered a personal loss that made me want to be around new people, so I joined the Running Room Run Club. It was a decision that changed my life in extremely positive ways.

I started running with the Wednesday evening club which then led me to try the Sunday morning club. At that point in time, if someone told me I’d be waking at 7:30 on a Sunday morning to RUN, I would have told them they were crazy. Nonetheless, I became a regular with the club and made some really great friends. Many of them were training to run a half-marathon so it seemed pretty natural to follow along and sign up for a 1/2 Marathon Learn to Run Clinic and guess who was teaching? Yup, it was my now best bud and partner Aaron.

I was inspired after that first half-marathon and craved more, so some of my friends and I set our sights on completing a full-marathon. Not long after, Aaron invited me on a run and we’ve trained together ever since.

Like many people, my first marathon was life changing. I will never forget the agony of the final 10 kilometers (6 miles for you metric haters!) and the amazing feeling of accomplishment at the finish line. It only took moments for me to decide I wanted to do another. As of today, I’ve completed six marathons and made some truly terrific friends.

Running highlights? The first is definitely the marathon Aaron and I ran together in 39 degree Celsius heat! A lot of people gave up or even collapsed on that day but we managed to persevere. Second is the finish time from my fifth marathon in October, 2003 where I set a 17 minute personal record that was three minutes faster than my goal time (Aaron finished 14 seconds ahead with his own five minute PR).

Thanks for visiting my home on the web - please come back soon!

39 degrees? Wow. The picture has 31 degrees on it (still wow for a marathon). Which is correct?

Hello Mark,
I am runner myself and I am casually browsing for some info on injuries and I am glad that I ran into your website. I am currenly suffering from knee injuries and I am wondering if I can get your email to communicate with you. I will greatly appreciate your help. I am actually looking for somebody who has the same passion for running to act as my mentor for sometime.
Your blog is really inspiring.
Thank you
Lakshmi

I have a question, a stupid one at that. I?ve recently started a running blog: http://runnersusan.blogspot.com/ and I?ve created a masthead for the top of my blog ? but I don?t know how to get it out there. Is there a book out there that everyone else uses to figure this blogging stuff out? Am I crazy for not know this? Thanks! Susan

Hi! Nice blog. I used to say “I only run when something with big teeth is chasing me!” Last month I started training for my first marathon, which will be PF Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in Phx, AZ on Jan.15, 2006. I’m a cyclist first and foremost, but I’m really starting to enjoy this running thing…it might catch on :)

Thanks for the inspiration.

like you I was a little over weight and turned 40 and decided to make some major changes in my life. I decided to do a marathon. I started off with some 10k runs and worked my way up to a 10 miler. I live Penticton and with the Ironman here every year the motivation here is incredible. Yesterday I completed my first marathon, I wont post the time as I had an injury around the 30k mark.I would have finished under the 4 hour mark but ened up a little farther down the time table. But the main thing is I finished. Today I feel a little tender. But I am not discouraged as I have signed up for the Ironman next August. Cheers Don

You’re on our Healthy Living Blog Blogroll! Although we our owners of a healthy vending company, we post about running quite a bit as it’s something we love to do. Awesome job here, I think I’m going to borrow your “100 things about me” concept!

I’m glad to see that you are such a strong believer in the Pose method.

I’m just working my way through Dr. Romanov’s materials, and I’m trying to find a suitable shoe. He love’s the Puma H. Street, and so do you, so I’m hoping that you know of a place to get them here in Alberta.

Where do you get yours? Surely not from Amazon.com!

Hey Mark,

Fistly, wow a killer blog man! I have been reading your posts and they are really good, my wife even enjoyed the film reccomendation, lol.

Anyway, this isn’t spam or anything like that but I was wondering if you would be interested in something. I have just started up a online store selling trainers and running shoes etc etc. Well something we always get asked about is running techniques and some of the technical side of things. While I am a runner myself I am certianly no expert, something I would love to do is have an ‘experts’ section with a few posts from people in the know. How do you fancy it, I dont want anything crazy just a couple of articles I guess.

Anyway if its not for you no problem, keep blooging man, its really interesting stuff.

Ben

I can relate on the weight gain and how running has changed my life. After college, I started working in finance, which involved me sitting at a desk for hours and I begain working out and running. not only did it help me at a physical level, but it also helped reduce stress. If you are an avid runner or just like to work out, check out Bodylogistics.com. They offer fitness appearal that is made out of 100% natural fibers…very similar to UnderArmor, but without the odor and of course its all natural. Happy Trails!—Harleen

Hey Mark, Im the guy that “ran” into you today down near Irene Parlby Park, and was inquiring about your shows. Great website you have here! I mapped out my run and it was just over 13k, but I couldnt save my route to send. I was wondering if you could get back to me and let me know how to save/send routes? Keep up the running and this great site!

Hi Mark,

I wondered whether you would be interested in either coming to/passing on info to others about my online launch party to celebrate the publication of my book: Running on Empty:Diary of a Marathon Mum. Two years ago I was a running virgin, till I got persuaded to run the London Marathon last year to celebrate my 40th year. It was a fabulous experience and as a mum of four my training was often very funny, so I decided to write a book about it to inspire other no hopers like me (I am probably the slowest runner on the planet!), and I hope to raise some more money for Tadworth Court Children’s Trust, which is the fabulous charity I ran for.

The launch party takes place from the 8-15 June ,and for more info about it and the book go to: http://maniacmum.blogspot.com or my website at: http://www.marathonmum.com

I’m away on holiday from tomorrow for a week, but back on 3 June.

best wishes

Julia Williams

Great website! I was overweight too and running has saved me and got me back on track. I feel great and my confidence level has skyrocketed.
Currently training for a corporate cup run and current pace is 8.5 min/mile…Goal is 7.5. Any tips on increasing the pace in 2 months time?

Hello Mark,

I don’t know if this question belongs here but it was the only place I could find.

I’m part of the running blog family network. I was wondering how my feed could get added to the other feeds whenever I update my blog? There are hundreds of blogs but it seems like the same half dozen or so get updated each time they post.

thanks for setting this up. I never knew there were so many people writing about their running activities.

Perry,44

Enjoyed your inspirational blog

Training for a 10K and injured my back overdoing it about a week ago — put my back out for about 4-5 days and am just recovering — still have pain (lower back), but moving is much easier and less painful….10K is in 1 week…doctor says it’s up to me, but doesn’t think I’ll be ready and says it could make me worse - any recommendations? I know there will be other 10Ks and don’t want permanent injury (also realizing, at age 38, that I’m not 20 anymore and need to hit the gym to do strength training/stretching more)

thanks for any advice
