Brendan has always suffered from night terrors.
When he was an infant they were QUITE alarming.
When he reached about 3 or 4 they became disturbing, he wouldn’t know who we were or where he was. He wouldn’t make sense when he tried to talk to us. One time he thought Chris was abducting him. And one time he thought I was a witch in a forest that took children (shut up jon!).

In the last couple of years they’ve become mostly entertaining. One time last winter he came down stairs…looked blindly at us and continued down to the basement to put on his skis. He thought he was a the ski hill and the change room is in the basement…I found him in our basement milling around looking for his ski boots.

They happen normally when he is over tired. Or if he is woken up half way through a deep sleep.

Last night he had all sorts of perfect conditions for a night terror event. (not sure what they are called when he’s not afraid…)
He’s been home with the flu this week, high fever..vomit the whole shebang. So a combination of the fever, exhaustion and gravol all came together to produce the following chuckle.

It was close to midnight, he had been asleep for maybe 2.5hrs. He came staggering out scratching his arms.

Bren: “I have a muslim rash”

us: “um”

Bren: “I have a muslim rash, I was on a dairy farm and I got covered in it”

Bren: “It’s disgusting”

us: “um”

us: “ok…”

So I herded him back to bed as usual. Once we got there he picked up his baby quilt and tossed it across the bed.

I asked him why he didn’t like his quilt tonight.

Bren “Because it fell in a dairy farm and now it’s disgusting”

Bren: “my hands feel weird”

At this point he suddenly woke up and was coherent.

Seriously weird.

I don’t know why BOTH my children have night terrors and waking dreams (THAT’S what it’s called when they aren’t so terrifying) but they say it’s often hereditary and parents that talk in their sleep (which I CONSTANTLY do) often produce children that talk, or freak their parents right the fuck out, in their sleep.

What’s SERIOUSLY scary is when Noah has one and is terrified of both of us,….he has NO clue who we are…and he cannot finish a sentence..he is usually sobbing. And he’s uncomfortable with us, and wants his parents.

Sometimes he tries to leave the room…because he’s SCARED of us.
I hate it.

then at some point he’ll have a yawn, the kind that gives you a shiver and then he’s back.

WEIRDNESS! And not nearly as funny as the muslim dairy farms.

The highway is closed.
It was +5 yesterday all day and into the night. It rained like crazy and then suddenly? Below zero and snow…high winds and LOW windchills (-40 by this afternoon).
FLASH FREEZE.
So…I might have to snowshoe to my interview?
Cause I am GOING, maybe i will be the only one that shows up?

In other unrelated news.
Did you know that when you ground your 12 year old (Happy Birthday Brendan) that it’s totally your fault. And that you are the reason they got in trouble?
EVEN if you offer to let them off their punishment for the day (seeing as it is their birthday afterall) but tomorrow we will resume with our regular scheduled punishment.
THAT is the most horrible thing you can do to a person!
He has NOTHING to do!
MEANEST!
PARENTS!
EVER!

Both kids are gone to school today.

all day.

And after such a tumultuous summer, I thought i would be doing back flips.

And I did….one. And it hurt my back.

And now I’m lonely. Even the dogs are sad.

July may have sucked monkey balls but August was pretty friggin good and adventurous.

My boys are gone. I have no babies anymore.

Noah was like “SEE ya!” And will NOT kiss me infront of his bus (we have to do that 10 minutes before it is due to arrive) and really kind of wanted me to wave from the step and not walk him to the end of the drive way.

he threw me a bone when he whispered in my ear (I will miss you today mommy), I don’t really believe him.

Brendan was a little nervous today, nothing horrible. He is worried about one kid in particular that doesn’t like that fact that people think Brendan is smart. Ok, but…Brendan IS smart. I think this kid is also smart and maybe feels Brendan is stepping on his toes.

A little pep talk….Adrian doesn’t matter…ignore ignore and if he touches you….tell someone.

And here I am….with the whole rest of my life ahead of me (or at least the whole rest of term)

What to do.

Get a job?

or

Make Chris finally build me a pottery wheel and stained glass work area so I can get my craft on

We shall see.

Oh I would have loved to share photos of the first day of school but oh yeah…My CAMERA FELL IN THE LAKE.

blarg!

and now I am off to lunch with my Momma.

cheers

tomorrow my new running program is to start.
nice and slowly.

however i am still awake, with a noah that has a sore tummy.

we are camping out in the rec room watching tv.

not sure what time we’ll get back to bed…I do know that Chris gets up for work in a few hours and will wake us unintentionally if we are down here.

his colour seems better and the cramps seem better and the chills are gone and i think i will try to put him back to bed, poor soul. nothing is worse than a tummy ache when you’re 4.

i pray to all that is holy that this is not a bug that has to work it’s horrible evil way through everyone.

zzzz

p.s. to those who care, Noah’s behaviour has improved 100% percent…ok…well maybe 75% It turns out that mommy and daddy stress totally effects the little ones.

DUH!

Sometimes I’m so stupid.

Brendan ended up sleeping out at a friends camp (what we call cottages here) last night. So after dinner in town with my mother putting the finishing touches on feffie’s wedding, I came home relaxed, refreshed & slightly over stuffed. After consulting my brilliantly edumacted internet lovah and my wacked out mother, I came up with some short term and long term solutions for my Noah, who has been so nasty lately.

And it’s totally all my fault….of course it is.

Clue number one being he NEVER acts this way for anyone else…only me…not in school, not even with Chris.

Up until about a month ago he didn’t act like this with me.

I have been on the phone or computer far too much during the day for whatever reasons. FAR TOO MUCH and not paying enough attention to him. And then we walk to my mom’s where…her and I chat about wedding stuff and family stuff and guess what? It’s not all about him there either.

AND for some unknown reason? I do not follow through with my threats of punishment with him. I was/am so consistent with Brendan, he KNOWS I mean business. But NOah? He knows I’ll just leave it and he’ll get it anyway.

Today has been better. I’ve made every effort to not ignore him. I even have my saturday morning phone/internet chat with Feffie without incident. We haven’t had one real issue with him today.

Sometimes I need a slap in the face.

Now if only Brit leaved close enough to work with him, I would totally pay her in baked goods.

It seems that spring is here. HURRAY for +20C. We like that.

I washed and hung all the bedding on the line yesterday it was SO nice to go to bed in such fresh smelling sheets and duvet covers lastnight.

For the entire 1.5 hrs I got to enjoy it that is.

Then Noah came in, and couldn’t settle down in our bed. So Chris took him back to his bed, where he whimpered and pouted and refused to lay down. I could hear Chris beginning to lose patience with him so I went in and sent him to bed (I make that sound so saintly and selfless when in reality and I stormed in there and shot him a look and hissed at him “speaking to him through clenched teeth is NOT going to help. MORON. Get out!” ahem).

I crawled in beside him ( under his fresh smelling sheets and duvet cover) and he immediately curled into me, SOBBING.

He was crying about all the bugs outside and how terrifying they are. Houseflies! Bees! SPIDERS! AHH!

I let him know that there weren’t any of those things in our house and certainly not in his room and he would be safe.

He quieted and we dozed. Hours or minutes or seconds later he was whimpering again, asking me if I would smash all the bugs I see outside with him. Yes…of course I will.

Will you keep me safe from the houseflies too?

Of course I will, but houseflies don’t hurt us.

What if they come and take my blood? (clearly kids at school are talking about bugs)

Well houseflies don’t like blood, they like garbage and stinky stuff, you aren’t stinky enough for a housefly.

But, how do they get your blood? HOW DO THEY GET YOUR BLOOD OUT OF YOUR BODY?

And then he curled into me again and we went back to sleep.

then he punched me…and kicked me…and nudged me…and punched me and snuggled right into me.
And we slept in a single bed.

At 8am he woke up, looked over at me and said

“What are you still doing here?”

Yesterday was gorgeous for the most part.

Noah and I went about our usual morning business, breakfast for him, copious amounts of tea & honey for me.

I nibbled a pb & nutella sandwich and browsed some blogs.

The drapes were open to light the livingroom, FINALLY light that isn’t reflected off the snow.

We decided we would hurry and leave early for school (he doesn’t start until 12:30) so we could play at the park.

Somehow that idea blossomed into LUNCH. AT THE PARK!

I searched the kitchen for picnic fodder and came up only with egg salad sandwichs, apple juice boxes and tea biscuits.

We packed it up and started towards the park.

The park backs on to our street…well kind of.

It backs on to a bush that backs on to our street (and Noah’s school backs on to the park). So on clear and dry days (and most of the wintery winter) Noah and I cut through the bush to get him to school in less than 10 minutes.

So the bush with it’s natural piles of large boulders is where we (and by WE I mean Noah) chose to have our picnic. He loves nothing better than a picnic. We ate egg salad and sipped out drink boxes. Noah climbed from rock to rock to rock to rock. It was lovely.

After lunch we went to the park where he ran himself into a snizzy, so happy to be outside and warm in a fleece jacket only. The equipment was finally puddle-free (for now anyway), black flies have not reared their ugly heads yet (come on heat wave!) and the bears are too busy finding the dump to bother us in our bush (so far).

To Noah it was the best lunch EVER. It may as well have been filet mignon. He told everyone about the fabulous picnic he had for lunch on the rocks.

After school, I brought him a rice crispy square, we stopped on our rocks again and he had his afternoon snack.

This time he was slightly more subdued and took the time to point out to me which rocks he has peed on from to time when nature calls while he is too busy at the park with his Dad (of course!) to make it up the street to home.

Nice.

If I had been smart enough to charge the batteries in my camera I would have even taken pictures of our picnic…but I’m certifiably brain dead these days so….no such luck.
